I — 2. 0 — 6.
» — « ’Ev a ùtw x* toucsT ttxv rh nXvjpOjy.a TY}Ç 0cÔTT|TOÇ. » . .

1the absolute emanates the divine forces that are its hypostases. these EMANATIONS ARE PROJECTED IN COUPLES (Syzygies) IN DECREASING SERIES; THESE ARE THE AEONS. Aiôç xal touç Acwvaç, says Apollos in the Epistle to the Hebrews (t. II). In the beginning was the Silence, eternal Aeon, source of the Aeons, the invisible Silence, the unnamed, the ineffable, the abyss; common speech calls it God. Principle and cause, infinite, enveloped in itself, it was not acting. But within its inviolate silence two "generators," the male principle and the female principle — the one, the male, illuminator from Above, the other, the female, illuminator from Below — contained the root, the source of Being, or rather were themselves the root and the source. The Abyss (Buthos), thus enveloping itself, contemplated itself together with its coeternal spouse, Thought (Ennoia). Silent like Him, Ennoia received, in this inexpressible embrace, the — 629 — fruitful seed, the divine seed of the Emanations. It was through Ennoia that the Abyss was to engender. For it was love, and love yearns to pour itself forth. And there is no love that does not desire something to love.
2The Abyss thus wished to pour itself forth, and together with Thought it emanates 1' Intelligence, the Aeon Nous, the first-born (Monogenès), alone capable of comprehending the greatness of its Dream. This is the first of the Aeons, the Arché, it is male, and God reveals himself through it. The act that emanates it emanates at the same time its companion, its kindred, the absolute Truth (Alêtheia), a female Aeon beside the male Aeon, subjectivity beside objectivity. Thus is constituted the first Tetrad. I — 2. Sigê-Ennoia (Silence and Thought). 3 — 4. Noûs-Alêtheia (Intelligence-Truth). This first tetrad is the interior, inner manifestation of the Absolute. The Aeons that issued from God in turn emanated as God had. Noûs and Alêtheia engendered the Word and the Life (Logos and Zôê). Logos and Zôê emanated the Human-Essence (Anthropos) and the Assembly (Ecclêsia). One must know that Anthropos is the Type-Man of whom our Humanity is but a distant copy, and that Ecclêsia is the Whole of the Cosmos. So that Anthropos, male, and Ecclêsia, female, are the two archetypes of the world of Intelligence and of that of matter. This is the second tetrad. 0 — 6. Logos-Zôê. 7 — 8. Anthropos-Ecclêsia. Together with the first tetrad, this second tetrad constitutes the Ogdoad, which condenses the ineffable beauties of the One, of the Absolute. IV Like their Father, the Aeons were to emanate, always by syzygy, by couple, by male principle and by female principle. Logos and Zôê thus emanated and projected:
31 — 2. — - Bythios and Mixis. 3 — 4. — Ageratos and Hénosis. S — 6. — Autophyês and Hedonê. 7 — 8. — Akinétos and Synkrasis. 9 — -10. — Monogenês and Makana. These ten Aeons form the Decad. Anthropos and Ecclêsia emanated and projected: 1 — 2. — Paraclutos and Pistis. 3 — 4. — Patricos and Elpis. o — 6. — Mêtricos and Agapê. 7 — 8. — Aeinous and Sunêsis. 9 — 10. -- Ecclêsiasticos and Makaridès. 11 - — 12. — Thélêtos and Sophia. These twelve Aeons form the Dodecad. The union of the Ogdoad, the Decad, and the Dodecad, manifesting the Absolute by successive and descending degrees, constitute the Fullness, or, to speak in Valentin's language, the Plérome. Each of the Aeons is a hypostasis of the life of 1' Abîme divin (the divine Abyss), a type reproducing it, a mysterious rung by which to ascend to it. The Ogdoad is higher than the Decad, and the Dodecad lower still. Valentin said, with Paul (Colossiens, II, 9): "In it dwells the Plérome of the divinity." — "'Ev a ùtw x* toucsT ttxv rh nXvjpOjy.a TY}Ç 0cÔTT|TOÇ." . . These notions contain the essence of the Theology of the great Valentin. We must now set forth, with the same simple clarity and without emphasis, the cosmogony of this doctor of the Gnosis, V
