The source text as printed, transcribed diplomatically. Where the source language uses a non-Latin script that reaches us only through a Victorian romanisation, this layer is labelled transliteration, because that is what we hold.
1The celestial Dragon is in the universe like a king upon his throne, the Zodiac in the year like a king in his city, the Heart in man resembles a king at war. And God made them opposites, Good and Evil. He made Good from Good and Evil from Evil. Good proves Evil, and Evil, Good. Good boils within the just, and Evil within the wicked. And each is constituted by the ternary. Seven parts are constituted by two ternaries, in the midst of which stands unity. The duodenary is constituted by opposing parts: three friendly, three hostile, three living give life, three kill, and God, faithful King, governs them all from the threshold of His holiness.
2Unity governs the ternary, the ternary the septenary, the septenary the duodenary, but each part is inseparable from all the others ever since Abraham our father considered, examined, deepened, understood, sculpted, engraved, and composed all this, and thereby joined the creature to the creator. Then the Master of the Universe manifested Himself to him, called him His friend, and bound Himself by an eternal covenant toward him and his posterity, as it is written: He believed in IOAH (mm) and it was counted to him as a work of Righteousness. HE made a pact with Abraham between his ten toes — that is the pact of circumcision — and another between the ten fingers of his hands — that is the pact of the tongue. HE attached the twenty-two letters to his tongue and revealed to him their mystery. HE made them descend into the water, made them rise into the fire, cast them into the air, lit them in the seven planets, and poured them out into the twelve celestial signs. 37 — 578 — REMARKS
3It is not our intention, in these brief observations, to write a commentary on the Sepher Jesirah. Such a commentary, to have any value, could only be based on the Hebrew text, whose language, still preserving its triple meaning1, alone allows the author's thought to be rendered in its entirety. Moreover, the most eminent masters in occultism, Guillaume Postel and the alchemist Abraham, have written, in Latin, excellent commentaries, to which we refer the reader wishing to go deeper into these questions. We wish to confine our ambition to clarifying, as best we can, the passages that are too obscure, by means of notes and by the translation of two little-known kabbalistic works: The fifty gates of Intelligence and The thirty-two paths of Wisdom. Generally speaking, one might call the Sepher Jesirah the book of kabbalistic creation rather than the kabbalistic book of creation. Indeed, it is upon the mysterious name IOAH (n-rv) that the whole book rests, and the creation of the world by HIM-THE-GODS2 is confined to the wholly kabbalistic creation of numbers and letters. In this the author of the Sepher proclaims, from the very outset, the characteristic method of the Occult Sciences: Analogy.
