2dans sa cause, Dieu dans l'Éternité outre les sens précédents. Tout à l’heure nous verrons l’origine de ces interprétations. A ce procédé se rattache l’usage des ligures magiques appelées pantacles qui résument, grâce à la disposition de quelques lignes, des lois naturelles très complexes. C’était là le moyen employé par l’initiation pour conserver les enseignements toujours présents à l’esprit des initiés. Nous reviendrons plus loin sur ce point très intéressant. En somme, le caractère de cette méthode ésotérique, c’est l’enseignement unitaire, l’enseignement élevé correspondant aux sciences les plus hautes symbolisées dans la classification occulte par la lettre iod (>) du tétragramme sacré. Moïse, en sélectant son peuple, le gouverna presque uniquement d’après cette méthode ; delà l’unitéisme des Juifs et le caractère mâle et sauvage de leur organisation. La transmission de la tradition par l’initiation était certes excellente ; mais elle n’offrait pas toutes les garanties de durée désirables. En effet qu’un cataclysme politique vienne saisir les dépositaires de la Science, que leurs livres soient brûlés, et tout est perdu. Aussi à côté de la première voie de transmission, à côté de l’ésotérisme, une seconde fut créée : celle de l'exutérisme, à l’usage de la foule. Les vérités du sanctuaire ne furent en rien changées ; une vérité ne se change pas sous peine de devenir une erreur ;

1Other signs are employed by the initiates and are, for that very reason, indispensable to know; these are the signs that designate the planets. They are all the more important in that each of them can be explained by the qualitative geometry we have just discussed. I shall not go into this study here, which would lead us far afield with no immediate result, so as to concern myself solely with their generation. The active and the passive are represented among the planets by the Sun (O) and the Moon (J). Their reciprocal action gives rise to the four elements, figured by the cross (f). b Saturn is the Moon dominated by the elements. % Jupiter, these are the elements dominated by the Moon. cf Mars is the fiery part of the zodiacal sign of the Ram acting upon the Sun. 9 Venus is the Sun dominating the elements. Finally the synthesis of all the preceding signs is Mercury, containing within itself the Sun, the Moon, and the elements. 3° — The use of qualitative geometry permits yet another method: the use of a single and same sign, which can be taken in different senses according to the reader's understanding. Thus the sign O will represent, for the illiterate, only a point within a circle. The learned man will understand that this sign represents a circumference and its center, or, astronomically, the Sun, and by extension truth (it is rare for the learned man to go beyond this degree). The initiate will see in it the Principle and its development, the Idea — 602
2— in its cause, God in Eternity, over and above the preceding senses. We shall shortly see the origin of these interpretations. To this procedure is attached the use of magical figures called pantacles, which summarize, through the arrangement of a few lines, very complex natural laws. This was the means employed by initiation to keep the teachings ever present in the minds of the initiates. We shall return further on to this very interesting point. In sum, the character of this esoteric method is unitary teaching, the elevated teaching corresponding to the highest sciences, symbolized in the occult classification by the letter iod (>) of the sacred tetragrammaton. Moses, in selecting his people, governed it almost exclusively according to this method; hence the unitism of the Jews and the masculine and untamed character of their organization. The transmission of the tradition through initiation was certainly excellent; but it did not offer all the desirable guarantees of duration. Indeed, let a political cataclysm come and seize the depositaries of Science, let their books be burned, and all is lost. So, alongside the first channel of transmission, alongside esoterism, a second was created: that of exoterism, for the use of the crowd. The truths of the sanctuary were not changed in the least; a truth cannot be changed without becoming an error;
3but they were veiled beneath legendary tales apt to strike the imagination of the people, the only faculty that can be appealed to among the profane. In the nineteenth century we have entirely lost the sense of this curious method. What better means for transmitting a truth than to engage the imagination instead of the memory? Tell a story to the peasant, and he will retain it, and, from one evening gathering to the next, the adventures of Vulcan and Venus will win posterity. Will the same be true of Kepler's Laws? I confess I find it hard to picture a good peasant woman sitting by the fireside enumerating the astronomical laws. Symbolic history, however, contains truths of another importance. The peasant sees in it only an agreeable exercise of the imagination; the scholar discovers with astonishment the laws of the Sun's motion; and the initiate, decomposing the proper names, sees in it the key to the great work, and thereby grasps the three senses that this story contains. This is why we shall see all religions, ancient or modern, accompanied by various legends which are only now beginning to be studied in our day from the scientific point of view.
