Moreover, mediums know what danger they are exposed to by the abrupt breaking of the chain, and you all know how much they insist that hands always remain interlaced, whatever happens, during the séances.

Suppose now that, while the fluidic emanations of the sitters are well harmonized through five or six successive séances, you introduce a person foreign to the group — what happens?

A certain time is needed for harmony to become established between this person and the group. During this time, everything remains in statu quo; the medium, far from progressing, has more difficulty putting himself into a state of phenomenality, and, should the strangers become more numerous, the phenomena, far from progressing, diminish in intensity and finally cease altogether.

Remarks. — One should not, however, believe that the preceding remark applies dogmatically to all cases. It is chiefly in the formation of mediums that it has its full bearing, and in the phenomena of apports and materialization.

When the medium is fully formed, he can, without fear, face all environments; the only result will be more or less fatigue for him. Such is the case of Eglinton, of Slade, of Home, of Mme Bablin, etc., etc.

Another very important remark bears upon the special state of mediums during the séance. The medium is unconscious — let us never forget this — and if he comes to deceive, it is because he is under an influence, on the part of the sitters or otherwise, which forces him to do so. If the medium deceives you, do not be discouraged; redouble your caution, take infinite precautions against error, and soon you will notice that, alongside these phenomena which seem to you simulated, there exist others whose authenticity you cannot deny. That is the point you wished to reach. It is understood, of course, that I speak of true mediums who have given their proofs, and not of the charlatans who are met with in spiritism as everywhere else.

FORMATION OF GROUPS AND OF MEDIUMS

From all the foregoing it follows that, once a group is constituted by the gathering of a certain number of persons, the work must be pursued regularly and without ever admitting strangers, under pain of abruptly halting the mediums' development.

Strangers should simply group themselves together to form a new nucleus of study, and then one of the mediums developed in the preceding group can devote himself entirely to the formation of this new group.

These remarks, once again, cannot be applied rigorously to the elementary phenomena of table-rapping and of mediumistic writing. It is for each of you to see their application.

Moreover, I am giving you here, Ladies and Gentlemen, the result of my personal research over the past few years. It is quite possible that the continuation of my studies

will modify this theory on many points. That is why I give it to you for what it is worth, asking you to verify for yourselves which points deserve some attention and which are contradicted by the facts.

Allow me, in closing, to thank you for the kind attention you have given me, and forgive me for perhaps having abused the permission granted me by your president, Mr. Leymarie.

§ 2. — MAGIC AND THE ASTRAL BODY

We shall have occasion to return presently to this question of Magic.

For now let us repeat that Magnetism and Spiritism are two of the mystical arts whose totality constitutes ceremonial Magic.

In Magic, the Will of the Operator, exalted by prayer 1 and by the ceremonies, acts upon his astral body and, projecting it forcefully at a distance, consciously produces the actions unconsciously produced by subjects and mediums.

« The soul purified by prayer, says Paracelsus, falls upon bodies like lightning; it drives away the darkness that envelops them and penetrates them intimately. »
