On obtiendra ainsi une série nouvelle de groupements correspondant à la réunion des individus (famille), à la réunion des familles (tribu), à la réunion des tribus (race), pour arriver à l’humanité. On pourrait continuer ainsi la progression, arriver à l’Humanité nouvelle cellule, puis à la Terre, puis au Monde, puis à l’Univers. Mais cellule, humanité, astre, monde, Univers, ne son! que des octaves de l’Unité toujours la même. N’allons-nous pas voir les cellules se grouper pour former un organe, les organes se grouper hiérarchiquement pour former les appareils et ceux-ci se grouper pour former l’individu ? Cellule, Organe, Appareil, Individu, telle est la progression qui constitue l’homme physiquement parlant. Mais cet individu, qu’est-ce sinon une cellule de l’humanité? La loi que suit la nature est si vraie que partout nous la retrouvons identique, quelle que soit l’étendue des objets considérés.
2L’homme se groupe pour former la famille, la famille se groupe pour former la tribu, les tribus établissent le groupement hiérarchique pour constituer la nation, reflet de l’Humanité. Homme, Famille, Tribu, Nation-Humanité. Mais qu’est donc l’humanité sinon une cellule de l’animalité? Cette animalité n’exprime qu’un des degrés des règnes existant sur la planète. 133 — Voyez les satellites se ranger autour des planètes, les planètes autour des Soleils pour constituer les Mondes ; les Mondes qui ne sont eux-mêmes que des cellules de l’Univers marquent en traits de feu dans l’infini les lois éternelles de la Nature. Partout éclate cette mystérieuse progression, cet arrangement des unités inférieures devant l’Unité supérieure, cette sériation1 universelle qui part de l’atome pour monter d’astre en Monde jusqu’à cette UNITÉ PREMIÈRE autour de qui gravitent les Univers. Tout est analogue, la loi qui régit les Mondes régit la vie de l’insecte. Étudier la façon dont les cellules se groupent pour former un organe, c’est étudier la façon dont les Règnes de la Nature se groupent pour former la Terre, cet organe de notre Monde ; c’est étudier la façon dont les individus se groupent pour constituer une famille, cet organe de l’Humanité. Étudier la formation d’un appareil par les organes, c’est apprendre la formation d’un monde par les planètes, d’une nation par les familles.
3Apprendre enfin la constitution d’un homme par les appareils, c’est connaître la constitution de l’Univers par les Mondes et de l’Humanité par les Nations. Tout est analogue : connaître le secret de la cellule c’est connaître le secret de Dieu. L’absolu est partout. — Tout est dans tout. D’après tout ce qui précède on voit que la définition de la Vie qui semble facile au premier abord est bien plus générale qu’on ne le pense ordinairement. Pour l’homme la vie est bien cette force charriée par le 1. En effet, cette force n’est qu’une modification de l’air qui renferme la vie de tous les êtres sur la Terre. The law that nature follows is so true that everywhere we find it identical, whatever the scope of the objects considered.
2Man groups himself to form the family, the family groups itself to form the tribe, the tribes establish a hierarchical grouping to constitute the nation, reflection of Humanity. Man, Family, Tribe, Nation-Humanity. But what, then, is humanity but a cell of animality? This animality expresses only one of the degrees of the kingdoms existing on the planet. 133 — See the satellites arrange themselves around the planets, the planets around the Suns to constitute the Worlds; the Worlds, which are themselves only cells of the Universe, mark out in traits of fire, in the infinite, the eternal laws of Nature. Everywhere this mysterious progression bursts forth, this arrangement of inferior unities before the superior Unity, this universal seriation1 that sets out from the atom to rise from heavenly body to World, up to that FIRST UNITY around which the Universes gravitate. All is analogous; the law that governs the Worlds governs the life of the insect. To study the way in which cells group themselves to form an organ is to study the way in which the Kingdoms of Nature group themselves to form the Earth, that organ of our World; it is to study the way in which individuals group themselves to constitute a family, that organ of Humanity. To study the formation of an apparatus by organs is to learn the formation of a world by planets, of a nation by families.
3To learn, finally, the constitution of a man through his apparatus, is to know the constitution of the Universe through the Worlds, and of Humanity through the Nations. All is analogous: to know the secret of the cell is to know the secret of God. The absolute is everywhere. — All is in all. From all that precedes, one sees that the definition of Life, which seems easy at first sight, is far more general than is ordinarily thought. For man, life is indeed that force carried by the 1. Indeed, this force is only a modification of the air, which encloses the life of all beings on Earth. If one 11e (a scanning misread of "ne") wishes, like most present-day scholars, to see the origin of life only in the terrestrial atmosphere, one may stop there. But we have seen that the terrestrial atmosphere, just like human blood, draws its vivifying principles from higher up, from the Sun itself.
