’Apvjv ! Jules Stany Doinel. LES GNOSTIQUES D 'ORLÉANS LE MARTYR ÉTIENNE 1

1Often the unfortunate one would rush to the very confines of the Fullness. Horos would push her back, just as the archangel with the flaming sword of the Bible pushed Adam and Eve back from the resplendent gates of Paradise. Then, Achamoth rolled about in the void and wept: Bounded in his nature, infinite in his longings, Man is a fallen God who remembers the Heavens. From these sacred tears was born the humid element. From this august sadness came forth matter. Then Horos took pity on Achamoth. He emanated, to console her, the Éon Jésus, whose companion she became, and who made a reflection of the Plérome shine upon her. Thus redeemed and rehabilitated, Achamoth emanated three elements: the Pneumatic, the Psychic, the Hylic. From these three elements she formed the Demiurge, unconscious craftsman of the worlds below. VII The Demiurge, who had within him at once the reflection of the Plérome and the natural element, separates the hylic principle from the psychic principle, originally intermingled in the chaos, and created from them six worlds, governed by six Éons. These six worlds are the spheres above, the sixfold zone of the Firmament. With the hylic principle, the Demiurge organized the material world: "This world subsists in God," said Valentin, "like a stain upon a white tunic." The Éon of this material world is Satan, also called the Archon of this world by Saint Paul. Satan was born of matter, together with his escort of perverse spirits.
2Soon the Demiurge wished to combat the wickedness of Satan. He set an adversary against him, man. Man's soul is formed of a ray of the psychic principle; his body, of a hylic fragment of matter. Achamoth insinuated — 633 — then into man a pneumatic seed. Hence the threefold nature of man. The Demiurge became jealous of his own work when he saw that it was ennobled by the pneumatic seed, a spark of the Plérome. To avenge himself, he imposed upon man the obligation to abstain from the savory fruit of the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Man disobeyed this law, revolted against the Demiurge, and was cast out of Paradise. A threefold hylic envelope poisoned his soul. The Demiurge subjected him to the appetites of the senses and gave him a taste for pleasures, in order to stifle within him the seed of light, the pneumatic clarity that Achamoth had given him. Achamoth, benevolent and gentle, compassionate and maternal, Achamoth, "salt of the earth" and "light of the world," then gave man grace, that invisible succor which allows him to resist his native concupiscences. Men are divided into three classes: The Pneumatics, or Gnostics, superior and initiated spirits, who follow the light of Achamoth; the Psychics, floating between light and darkness, between Achamoth and the Demiurge; the Hylics, subjects of Satan, whose soul is material and who will be annihilated. Seth, Abel, Cain represent these three categories. VIII
3It remains for us to set forth the Redemption, according to Valentin. Our world, that of us Men, was redeemed by the Éon Jésus. He came through the immaculate channel of the Éon MiRiAM whom we call Marie. The Éon Jésus has nothing material in him. He is formed of a psychic principle borrowed from the Demiurge and of an astral body. He is animated by Christ, who left the Plérome and rested upon him, communicating to him absolute power over the world of Satan. His teaching has redeemed, and still redeems, the Pneumatics. At the moment of the Passion, Christos, the impassible Éon, sustained and strengthened him. The Cross (Stauros), having become the boundary separating the Pneumatics from other men, is the sacred symbol of the Gnosis. Such is, in its entirety, the doctrine of Valentin. It answers all difficulties. Never has the Absolute manifested itself more luminously than in this admirable epic, which unfolds successively across the three worlds. There would remain to speak of gnostic morality. Let it suffice now to say that it proclaims God innocent of evil, of suffering, and of injustice. The origin of Evil will furnish us the matter for another study. May the Éon that accompanies each of us enlighten us, illuminate us, purify us. 'Aµήν ! Jules Stany Doinel.
