« I approached myself, or rather my body, or what I believed to be already my corpse. A sight that I did not understand at once drew my attention: I saw myself breathing, but, further, I saw the inside of my chest, and my heart was beating there slowly, in weak jolts, but regularly. I saw my blood, fiery red, flowing in large vessels. At that moment, I understood that I must have had a syncope of a particular kind, unless people who have a syncope, I thought to myself, no longer remember what happened to them during their faint. And, then, I

feared I would no longer remember when I came back to myself...
« Feeling a little reassured, I cast my eyes around me, wondering how long this was going to last, then I no longer concerned myself with my body, with the other me who still lay on his couch. I looked at my lamp, which continued to burn silently, and I made this reflection, that it was quite close to my bed and might set the curtains on fire: I took the knob, the wick key, to put it out, but, there again, a new subject of surprise! I felt the knob perfectly, with its knurl, I perceived, so to speak, each of its molecules, but however I turned with my fingers, only my fingers themselves executed the movement, and it was in vain that I tried to act upon the knob.
« I then examined myself and saw that, although my hand could pass through me, I could feel my body quite distinctly, which appeared to me, if my memory does not fail me on this point, as though clothed in white. Then, I placed myself before my mirror, opposite the fireplace. Instead of seeing my image in the glass, I noticed that my sight seemed to extend at will, and the wall, first, then the back of the paintings and furniture that were at my neighbor's, and then the interior of his apartment, appeared to me. I became aware of the absence of light in these rooms where my sight was nevertheless operating, and I perceived quite distinctly a kind of ray of brightness that started from my epigastrium and lit up the objects.
« The idea came to me to enter my neighbor's rooms, whom I did not, moreover, know, and who was at that moment away from Paris. Scarcely had I had the desire to visit the first room than I found myself transported there.
— 865 —
How? I have no idea, but it seems to me that I must have passed through the wall as easily as my sight penetrated it. In short, I was at my neighbor's for the first time in my life. I inspected the rooms, engraved their appearance on my memory, and then made my way toward a bookcase, where I particularly noticed several book titles placed on a shelf at the height of my eyes.
« To change place, I had only to wish it, and, without effort, I found myself where I was to go.
« From that moment on, my memories are very confused; I know that I went far, very far, to Italy, I believe, but I could not say how I spent my time. It is as though, no longer having control of myself, no longer being master of my thoughts, I found myself transported here or there, according to where my thought directed itself. I was not yet sure of it, and it scattered me, so to speak, before I could grasp it — the mad woman of the house, as it were, now carrying the house away with her.
« What I can add, in closing, is that I awoke at five o'clock in the morning, stiff, cold, on my sofa, and still holding my unfinished cigar between my fingers. My lamp had gone out; it had smoked up the glass. I went to bed without being able to sleep and was shaken by a shiver. At last sleep came. When I awoke, it was broad daylight.
« By means of an innocent stratagem, that very day, I induced my concierge to go and see in my neighbor's apartment whether anything had been disturbed, and going up with him, I was able to find again the furniture, the paintings I had seen the night before, as well as the titles of the books I had attentively noticed.
« I have taken great care not to speak of this to anyone

for fear of passing for mad or hallucinating... » His account finished, Mr. H. added:
« What do you think of that, doctor 1? »
To this question of the astral body two further points are attached: prophetic dreams and certain forms of madness.
