made courageous efforts to raise the intellectuality of the association from the occult point of view; but how can one teach the most elevated part of Science to people who do not possess its first elements?
The light that Freemasonry promises its adepts under the seal of the most rigorous oath, it can give only to those who are learned enough to acquire it on their own and who, consequently, have no need to pledge their liberty.
The curious person who wishes to be truly initiated among the E.'. of the V.'. therefore wastes his time, theoretically speaking, although it is perhaps the only society in the world that furnishes him with such abundant resources for the daily practice of life.
That said, we owe all our gratitude to Freemasonry for the services it has rendered to thought by acting against the sectarianisms and despotisms of every age.
Will it know how to continue on its way without itself becoming sectarian?
Where, then, must one turn to find living guides in the study of occultism, failing Freemasonry?
At the time of the first editions of our Treatise, we had been deceived by the promises of a Society that seemed as though it would keep its engagements: the Theosophical Society. Undeceived since, as were all the French, we had not tarried in seeing that this Society aimed to destroy everything that was not humbly submissive to a former Spiritist medium wishing to play the inspired prophet, a certain lady Blavatsky, a Russian naturalized American, to whom French scholars, among others Richet, director of the Revue Scientifique, had spoken their mind. Since that time all French occultists — abbé Roca, the kabbalists, the Spiritists, and your servant — have been attacked by this apostle of « Universal Fraternity ».
As it is absolutely important to know the currents created at the present time under the influence of the pure Western Tradition, we shall now give a brief history of contemporary occultism. There the reader will find the answer to the question posed above, concerning the means of acquiring Initiation.
§ 2. — CONTEMPORARY OCCULTISM
If we go back to the history of the transmission of the tradition, we shall see that we stopped our account at the advent of Freemasonry, which came to synthesize within itself the combined efforts of the Hermetists, the Rose-Croix, and the Templars.
11 must not be thought, however, that this particular current had suddenly ceased to exist because of this. Each of them continued its evolution in a certain way, and we shall find nearly all of them again in our own day.
The principal currents connected with occult Science are:
« 1° The Templars. — Practical realizers pursuing the philosophical advent of the Gnosis,
— 999 —
5° The Rose-Croix. — A mixture of practice and theory.
3° The Hermetists. — Theoreticians and philosophers applying esotericism to science.
The latter possess the tradition almost in extenso.
FROM 1750 TO 1850
Let us begin our account in the years close to 1750. We shall trace the course of each of these currents from 1750 to 1890, and the birth of the new channels of transmission.
In 1740, the Templar realizer current, centered in Germany, sent the mysterious figure known under the name of the Comte de Saint-Germain to prepare France for the great victory of the Gnosis over Royalty and the Papacy.
In 1754, the initiate Martinez Pasqualis, descended from the pure Hermetists, founded an initiation intended to preserve the principles of the occult Tradition. This rite, loosely connected to Freemasonry, was that of the Martinesists, from which would emerge:
Around 1775, Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin, the unknown philosopher, founder of Martinism, which likewise connects at the outset to Freemasonry. Saint-Martin became the head of the entire Hermetic movement. 11 wrote from 1775 to 1802.
In 1766, a pupil of the German illuminati, Mesmer, rediscovered a part of ancient Magic under the name of animal Magnetism, and thereby founded a powerful school attached to these ideas. The Marquis de Puységur discovered somnambulism in 1787.
