1° Aux êtres inconscients : les Elément als obéissant passivement à toute influence. Ceux-ci se retourneront contre le Mage et le dévoreront le jour où une Volonté plus forte que la sienne les commandera ;

The knowledge of the power to generate ideas for a determined purpose and to ally them with the unconscious forces of Nature is one of the most profound arcana of practical Magic.

This arcanum is based on the fact that the idea is a force in potentiality of being, which will act well or ill according to the motive that gave it birth. Oriental esotericism defines this question very well, already studied by Fabre d'Olivet:

« Each thought of man, at the moment it is developed, passes into the inner world, where it becomes

an active entity through its association, what we might call its fusion, with an ELEMENTAL, that is to say with one of the semi-intelligent forces of the kingdoms of nature. It survives as an active intelligence, a creature engendered by the spirit, for a time more or less long according to the original intensity of the cerebral action that gave it birth.

« Thus a good thought is perpetuated as an actively benevolent power; a bad one as a maleficent demon. And in this way, man continually peoples his current through space with a world of his own, in which throng the children of his fantasies, of his desires, of his impulsions and of his passions; this current reacts, in proportion to its dynamic intensity, upon every sensitive or nervous organization that comes into contact with it. The Buddhist calls it his SHANDRA, the Hindu gives it the name of KARMA 1 2. The adept consciously involves these forms; other men let them escape without being conscious of it*. »

The agent by means of which one acts upon these intellectual forces is the Will. It can be seen in chapter 18 3 that human faculties are, in themselves, indifferent to good as to evil; their bearing varies according to the impulse that the Will attaches to them. It is absolutely the same with these elementary beings.

After death, life spreads out into Nature. After

psychic death, the higher NOT-SELF spreads out into the Divinity and merges with it.

Conscious immortality at the degree of the Kosmos is attained, as Wronski shows, only when the being succeeds, through absolute Holiness, in identifying his SELF with the higher NOT-SELF.

Let us say that the immortality of the physical body could be attained only by identifying, through the absolute Science of Life, the lower NOT-SELF (astral body) with the physical body, the earthly personality

These are rare exceptions. What is important to remember is that what the spiritist calls a "Spirit" corresponds absolutely to what the occultist calls an "elementary"; there is in all this only a difference of words, spiritism, a primary philosophy, not having to broach the transcendental questions that belong to the domain of the Science of the sacred Mysteries.

The Mage can thus call upon two kinds of beings:

1° Unconscious beings: the Elementals, obeying passively every influence. These will turn against the Mage and devour him on the day when a Will stronger than his own commands them;

2° Conscious and voluntary beings: the Elementaries. These will obey if they are willing to. It is they who appear to the unfortunate victims of the hallucinations of Sorcery under the figure of the devil, with whom pacts are made.

At death, the psychic entity constituted by the totality

of all of man's thoughts forms a psychic SELF.
