-ment; and the last, built to the southeast of this one, at the distance of a stone's throw from the second, symbolizes Time. To the south of this last, at a modest distance, on a line extending from East to West, rise three other pyramids, forming less considerable masses, near which are piled innumerable colossal stones that one might regard as the ruins of a seventh pyramid. It is indeed permissible to suppose that the Egyptians had wished to represent, by seven flame-shaped needles or conoids, the seven planetary worlds whose genii govern our universe, and of which Hermes was the revealer. » (Christian, Hist. de la Magie, p. 99 et 100.)

Each pyramid is built on a square base, symbolizing thereby matter, form, sign, adaptation.

The elevation of each of the sides is Ternary, and symbolizes idea, theory.

What does this supremacy of the Ternary over the quaternary mean? The Ternary dominates the Quaternary, that is to say:

The whole of the Pyramid is formed of 4 and of 3, that is to say of seven, symbol of the alliance between the Idea and the Sign, between Spirit and Matter, between Theory and Practice — it is Realization.

Above, the Pyramid shows us a mathematical point (its apex) from which spring four ideas (four triangles). These four ideas come to rest upon a single form (the base), and thereby show their solidarity.

In the study of these pyramids we find again the mysterious tetragram.

The Idea
The Spirit
The Theory

the Sign the Matter the Practice.

THE PENTAGRAM

The Pentagram, or five-pointed star, the Blazing Star of the freemasons, is likewise a pantacle, and one of the most complete that can be imagined.

Its meanings are manifold, but they all come back to the primordial idea of the alliance of the quaternary and of 1 Unité (a scanning garble for "l'Unité," i.e. "Unity").

This figure especially designates man, and it is in this sense that we shall study it.

The upper point represents the head, the other four points the limbs of man. One can also regard this pantacle as an image of the five senses; but this too positive meaning need not detain us.

Without wishing to explain here completely the secrets of this figure, we can show how easy is the interpretation that can guide one in its practical application. Indeed, magicians make use, in order to act upon spirits, of the Pentagram with the point upward; sorcerers, of the Pentagram with the point downward.

The Pentagram with the point upward indicates man in whom the will (the head) leads the passions (the limbs).

The idea being represented by 3, and matter (the dyad) by 2, one can, by thus decomposing the Pentagram, show this domination of Spirit over Matter.

The Pentagram with the point downward represents the same figure as the reversed cross; it is the man in whom the passions carry away the will, it is passive man, the man who lets his will be subjugated by evil spirits, it is the Medium.

— 980 —

In this position the Pentagram indicates the materialization of Spirit, the man who consents to put his head downward and his legs in the air.

The Pentagram can thus represent Good or Evil according to the direction it takes, and that is why it is the image of Man, of the Microcosm, capable of doing Good or Evil according to his Will.

In Goethe's Faust, one can see the magical use of the Pentagram (Acte 1er).

THE TAROT

There exists a marvelous set of 22 Pentacles, each expressing one of the forces of the absolute: this is the Tarot des Bohémiens.

We have devoted a large volume to the study of these pantacles and to the discovery of their law of construction; so we refer the curious to that study.

We shall now reproduce the 22 mystic pantacles of the Tarot, as rendered by Oswald Wirth.
