1— 265 — within the following incarnation. Between two existences, the soul enjoys a rest accompanied by the bliss inherent in its essence. According to this theory of incarnation, the place of suffering is no longer a location accessible only to theological conceptions; it is within the world of Matter, upon the Earth or upon some other planet, that, clothed with a material body, we shall experience the effects of our former acts. Our hell, our purgatory, and our paradise will be the Earth, according as we shall have willed it. We are now in a position to understand this description of the Earth and of its action upon the soul that comes to incarnate itself: « It is the Earth, one of the thousand citadels of the Kingdom of Man, immortal and mortal Son of God the Gods, it is Demeter, it is Adamah, the world of effigies and of physical Realities, Hell, Purgatory, Paradise, according to the soul that incarnates itself, according to the Spirit that reigns within the flesh of incarnate souls, according to the Faith, the Law, the Customs of the Social State1. » This theory raises important problems. 1° If the soul incarnates itself within man, at what moment does this incarnation take place? 2° Does one retain the memory, within an incarnation, of previous existences? 3° How is the soul constituted at the moment of incarnation? We have always made every effort to reconcile metaphysical theories with the positive teachings of our sciences; and so it is now necessary for us, if we do not wish to produce a triple gibberish2, to set forth 1. 2. Définition de la Métaphysique par Voltaire. rapidly the manner in which the human being is formed, from the instant of conception up to that of birth.
2To understand properly the phenomena that accompany the development of the human embryo, and their reason for being, we shall examine the growth of a plant, and then we shall approach that of man, after a few analogical deductions. A tree, like a stalk of wheat, is composed of three essential parts: 1° A part that plunges into the Earth: the root. 2° A part situated in contact with air and light: the leaves. 3° An intermediate part serving for the circulation of various principles: the stem. What is the purpose of these three parts? The root, plunging into the Earth, is the true stomach of the plant. It goes to seek the matter necessary for the growth of this plant, its coarse nourishment. The leaves, plunged into the air (free or dissolved), are the lungs of the plant. They go to seek the light and the gases necessary for the renewal of the plant's force, of that force which will use the matter within the intimacy of the tissues. The stem contains vessels, in certain of which rises the result of the plant's digestion, a liquid generally of a milky appearance: this is the sap. This sap is the analogue of chyle in man. In 267 —
3other vessels of this stem descends the product of the action of the lungs (the leaves): the absorbed air; within others, the result of the action of this air upon the sap: the descending sap. The plant may thus be conceived synthetically as a being possessing a belly (the root), a producer of matter, lungs (the leaves), producers of force, and a rudimentary system of circulation, all this constituting a kind of chest. If we further note that the grains colored green within the plant, and to which it owes its own coloration (chlorophyll), are the true blood corpuscles of this plant; if we add further that this vegetable being possesses organs of reproduction, we shall have made the complete analysis of this plant, physiologically speaking. In sum: a belly (root), a chest (leaves), vessels, corpuscles (chlorophyll), reserve matter (sap). No heart. Neither spleen, nor nervous system. What are the principles of esotericism that enter into the composition of this vegetable being? 1. The body. — Rupa. 2. Vitality. — The proper life of the vegetable cells. — Jiva. 3. The material part of the astral body. — The portion of astral body condensed within the corpuscles of chlorophyll, or their analogue Linga sharira. These preliminary considerations were indispensable in order to understand what follows. ■* * * The element that will give birth to a new plant, — 268 —
