1JAKIN and BOAZ) or by the positions given to the arms of a figure, one raised upward to designate the ascending current, the other lowered toward the earth to designate the descending current. Let us bring together all these elements and we shall see appear the figure that constitutes the 21st key of the Tarot, the image of the absolute. The serpent represents the universal force; the four symbolic animals, the law of the balanced forces emanated from this force; the two columns at the center of the serpent, the course of the Motion; and the young girl, the resulting production, Life. The ouroboros, considered alone, without its development, thus expresses one of the most general principles that exist. It will be the image: In the Divine World: Of the action of the Father upon the Son. In the Intellectual World: Of the action of Liberty upon Necessity. In the Material or Physical World: Of the action of Force upon Resistance. This figure is capable of a host of further applications. In a word, it is a pantacle, an image of the absolute. There exists another pantacle, still more profound in its teaching than that of the theosophical society, today fallen, as it deserved to fall, through the conduct of its founders — that of Claude de Saint-Martin. God, the first principle of the Universe, is represented by a circle (symbol of eternity). The action of Eternity passing from Potentiality into act is symbolized by the mystic relation of the center to the circumference, by the radius projected six times around the circle, whence the hexagon of the six periods of creation. The central point forms the 7th period (rest). THE PANTACLE OF MARTINISM. — 964 —
2It is within these creative emanations (aeons) that Nature will evolve, with its two currents of involution and evolution (ascending triangle and descending triangle). Let us note that Nature does not attain to God; it attains only to the creative forces emanated from him. Thus, from the center of the Universe to God himself, the power of man arises, allying the effects of Divinity with the fatalism of Nature within its triple nature, synthesized by the Unity of free will into a quaternary (the cross). This cross, the image of man, unites the center of the Universe (the human soul) to God himself. Such is the explanation of the universal pantacle of Martinism. 3. — EXPLANATION OF THE PANTACLES. Explanation of the Pantacles. — These figures, which seem at first glance so mysterious, nevertheless become, in most cases, relatively easy to explain. Here are the most general rules that can be assigned to this explanation: I. Decompose the figure into its elements; — 965 — II. Observe the position these elements occupy in the figure, one in relation to the others; III. Seek the science to which the pantacle is most closely related.
3I DECOMPOSITION OF THE FIGURE INTO ITS ELEMENTS Every pantacle, however complex it may appear, can be decomposed into a certain number of elements relating to qualitative geometry (see chap. IV). We shall now review a certain number of elements, thanks to which the work will be considerably shortened. But first I wish to give a method that should always be employed when the determination of the elements is difficult: that of counting them. One then finds them arranged in threes, in sevens, or in twelves. If they are arranged in threes, the idea they contain is that of Active-Passive-Neutral and of its consequences. If they are arranged in sevens, they relate either to the seven planets or to the colors of the hermetic work, and the 3° consideration (the science to which the figure relates) then clarifies the description. Finally, if they are arranged in twelves, they express every zodiacal motion, and that of the Sun in particular. This difficulty set aside, let us examine some of the principal elements. The cross expresses the opposition of forces two by two, giving rise to the Quintessence. It is the image of the action of the Active upon the Passive, of Spirit upon Matter. Naturally the head dominates the body, Spirit dominates Matter; when sorcerers wish to express their ideas in a pantacle, they formulate their imprecations by destroying the harmony of the 966 figure; they place the cross with its head downward, and thereby express the following ideas:
