3De là l’axiome alchimique : ev to irav.

1X The sinister procession of bishops, courtiers, priests, soldiers surrounding the victims crossed the surging waves of the multitude, heading toward the royal prison of the Châtelet. There the Gnostics were locked up. Meanwhile, a colossal pyre had been raised at one of the gates of the city, probably the Bourgogne gate. On the 28th of December, feast of the Holy Innocents, the pious executioner chose from among the prisoners the leaders, the doctors, the clerks, the most eminent laypeople, the most devoted women, and had them led to the terrible death of burning. These saints and these holy women showed a heavenly joy. They vied with one another over who would be part of the chosen band for death. Of their own accord, says the chronicler, they presented themselves to the executioners. The king had taken fourteen, reserving the rest for the in pace, for the slow and painful agony of the dungeon. Of these fourteen, there was one who recanted. The others went singing into the flames. From the midst of the fire, Stephen cried that he felt no pain. Miracles were renewed for these martyrs. Like the deacon Laurence, they seemed to lie upon a bed of roses. Like the three Hebrews, they sang in the furnace. Their voices died away in the flames, one after another. Robert had killed the Gnosis, he thought. Yet the Gnosis was not dead. In 1023 it reappeared at Limoges. In 1025 it was reborn at Arras. A little later at Liège. In 1200 it founded a church at Bardy near Pithiviers. The atrocious Robert was the first in France to invent the stake as a punishment for heretics. Julien Havet has proven it in a learned memoir. From that time on, the stake never ceased to burn. The abominable king whom lying History surnames the Pious was so proud of his criminal invention that, in this very same year 1022, he thus dated one of his diplomas: 'Actum Aurelianis, publiée, anno Incarnationis M. XXII... quando STEPHANUS HERESIARCOS et complices ejus damnati et arsi sunt Aurelianis.' — That is to say: 'Given at Orléans, publicly, the year 1022 of the Incarnation, when the HERESIARCH STEPHEN and his accomplices were condemned and burned!'
2— 641 — Let us note this word 'Heresiarcos' — prince of Heretics! It is precious. It indicates that our blessed martyr was the chief and doctor of the Gnosis. Happy is he who believes, who loves and who teaches as he did! Happier still is he who knows, as he did, how to suffer and die for the Faith! for the holy Gnosis! May the date of the 28th of December become sacred for all of you, my brothers and my sisters Initiates. Jules Stany Doinel. 41 É, CHAPTER XIII TRADITION IN THE MIDDLE AGES ALCHEMY METHODICAL SUMMARY OF ALCHEMY The common opinion about Alchemy is that it is a deceitful art tending to artificially make gold and that it ruined quite a number of the credulous in the age of the Middle Ages. The first question that arises before us, then, is to know how this Alchemy should be regarded from the standpoint of Occult Science. For this we shall set aside, if you will, the commentaries and dissertations written on alchemy in contemporary Encyclopedias, and we shall address ourselves directly to those whom the alchemists themselves consider the masters of their science. Let us take the work of Raymond Lull, for example. What do we find there? Something quite other than the rules of that special art considered as the sole preoccupation of the alchemists. In every serious work relating to hermetic philosophy we shall in fact find: 1° A profound philosophy serving as the basis for a natural synthesis, taking as its point of departure the theory of evolution extended to its maximum and that of the unity of substance and the unity of the plan. 6 44 —
3Hence the alchemical axiom: ev to irav. All is in all. 2° A judicious application of the principles of the Hebrew Kabbalah allied to the Egyptian and gnostic tradition. 3° Numerous practices of physics, chemistry or biology in support of these theories. To wish, then, to see in Alchemy nothing but chemical practices is to mutilate, in the most odious manner, a complete teaching in which practice came only as justification of scientific theory. A true alchemist was thus at once a physician, an astronomer and an astrologer, a philosopher, a kabbalist and a chemist. Thus the studies were very serious and quite lengthy, transmitted by initiation from the master to one or two favorite disciples and carefully hidden from the profane. Alongside these scholars, these true hermetic philosophers, there appear ignorant charlatans whose sole aim is the acquisition of material riches. These have always done nothing but discredit Alchemy. The several thousand volumes written in French found in our libraries under the heading of hermetic philosophy thus comprise: 1° Treatises on natural history; 2e Treatises on ordinary physics and chemistry; 3° Treatises d1 on Alchemy properly so called, or the preparation of the philosopher's Stone; 4° Treatises on philosophy and kabbalah or astrology. 5° A kind of encyclopedias in which all these genres are combined. This overview allows us to establish that the esoteric tradition, in all its branches, is represented by hermetic philosophy. How was the transition of this tradition from Egypt to the West accomplished? This is what we shall now see. The study of the depositaries of Esotericism has allowed us to establish that the Essenes on the one hand, the Gnostics on the other, alone kept the keys of Occult Science. The Essenes, keeping themselves apart from all political life, had remained in Palestine and had instituted several secret societies. The Gnostics had everywhere sought to spread their teachings. After the freedom left to the regional faculties to divulge the esoteric teachings, several treatises concerning the practices of Occult Science had been written according to the traditions of the Egyptian University itself.
