CHAPITRE I — 573 —
The source text as printed, transcribed diplomatically. Where the source language uses a non-Latin script that reaches us only through a Victorian romanisation, this layer is labelled transliteration, because that is what we hold.
1— 571 — rest your spirit in the very heart of the red race, upon the first civilization that the first continent produced, you will hear the inspired prophet sing of the divine inhabitants of the higher orb who revealed to them the symbolic secret of the sanctuary. Let us leave aside this elusive Proteus that is called the origin of Esotericism, and consider the Kabbalah, in which, with a little work, we shall be able to rediscover the common fund, the Unique Religion of which all cults are emanations. To know what the Kabbalah is, let us listen to a man profoundly learned, as wise as he is modest, and who never speaks unless he is certain of what he affirms: Fabre d'Olivet. « It appears, according to the most famous rabbis, that Moses himself, foreseeing the fate his book was to undergo and the false interpretations that would be given to it in the course of time, had recourse to an oral law, which he gave by word of mouth to trustworthy men whose fidelity he had tested, and which he charged them to transmit in the secrecy of the sanctuary to other men who, transmitting it in turn from age to age, thus caused it to reach the most distant posterity. This oral law which modern Jews still flatter themselves with possessing is called Kabbalah, from a Hebrew word which means that which is received, that which comes from elsewhere, that which passes from hand to hand1 ». Two books can be regarded as the foundation of kabbalistic studies: the Zohar and the Sepher Jesirah. Neither of them has been, so far as I know, completely translated into French; I shall endeavor to fill part of this gap by translating the Sepher Jesirah as best I can. I ask the reader to forgive in advance any errors that may have crept into my work, to which I append a bibliography allowing the researcher to consult the originals, and notes that clarify, as far as possible, the passages of the text that are too obscure.
21. Fabre d'Olivet, la langue hêbr. restituée, p. 29. 572 THE KABBALISTIC BOOK OF CREATION, IN HEBREW, SEPHER JESIRAH By Abraham It is with the Thirty-two paths of Wisdom, admirable and hidden paths, that IOAH (min») GOD of Israel, LIVING GODS and King of the Ages, GOD of mercy and grace, GOD sublime and most high, GOD dwelling in Eternity, holy GOD, engraved His name through three numerations: SEPHER, SEPHAR and SIPUR, that is to say the NUMBER, the NUMBERING and the NUMBERED1, contained within Ten Sephiroth, that is to say ten properties, besides the ineffable, and twenty-two letters. The letters are constituted by Three mothers, seven doubles and twelve simples. The ten Sephiroth, besides the ineffable, are constituted by the number X, that of the fingers of the hand, and five against five; but in their midst is the covenant of unity. In the interpretation of language and of circumcision one finds again the Ten Sephiroth besides the ineffable. Ten and not nine, Ten and not eleven, understand in your wisdom and you shall know in your comprehension. Exercise your mind upon them, seek, note, think, imagine, restore things to their place and make the Creator sit upon his throne. Ten Sephiroth, besides the ineffable, whose ten properties are infinite: the infinite of the beginning, the infinite of the end, the infinite of good, the infinite of evil, the infinite in height, the infinite in depth, the infinite in the East, the infinite in the West, the infinite in the North, the infinite in the South, and the Lord alone is above; a faithful King, he dominates them all from the height of his throne throughout the ages of ages. Ten Sephiroth, besides the ineffable; their aspect is like that of scintillating flames, their end is lost in the infinite. The 1. Abendana translates these three terms by Scripture, Numbers and the Word.
3Transmitted successively orally to his sons; then, given the bad state of Israel's affairs, entrusted by the sages of Jerusalem to arcana and to letters of the most hidden meaning. CHAPTER I — 573 —
