1EXPLANATION OF THE EMERALD TABLE THE ASTRAL LIGHT It is true. Without falsehood. Most true. The Emerald Table begins with a trinity. Hermes thus affirms, from the very first word, the Law that governs the whole of Nature. We know that the Ternary reduces to a hierarchy designated under the name of: the Three Worlds. It is thus one and the same thing considered under three different aspects that these words present to us for consideration. This thing is truth and its threefold manifestation in the Three Worlds: It is true. — Sensible truth corresponding to the physical World. — This is the aspect studied by contemporary Science. Without falsehood. — Opposition of the preceding aspect. Philosophical truth, certainty corresponding to the metaphysical or moral World. Most true. — Union of the two preceding aspects, the thesis and the antithesis, to constitute the synthesis. — Intelligible truth corresponding to the divine World. — 660 —
2One can see that the explanation I gave previously of the number Three finds here its brilliant application. But let us continue: That which is above is like that which is below, and that which is below is like that which is above, to accomplish the miracles of one thing. In arranging this phrase thus, we find first two Ternaries, or rather one Ternary considered under two aspects, positive and negative: below analogous to above We then find the application of the method of Occult Science, analogy. — Hermes says that the positive (above) is analogous to the negative (below); he is careful not to say that they are alike. Finally we see the constitution of the four by the reduction of the three to unity 1: to accomplish the miracles of one thing. Or of the seven, by the reduction of the six (the two Ternaries) to unity. The four and the seven expressing the same thing 2, one may take with certainty either of the two applications. Let us bring the explanation of the second phrase close to the explanation of the first, and we shall see: That one must consider a Truth in its threefold aspect, physical, metaphysical and spiritual, before all else. It is only then that one can apply to this knowledge the analogical method that will allow one to learn the Laws. Finally, that one must reduce the multitude of Laws to unity through the discovery of the Principle or the First Cause. Hermes next takes up the study of the relations of the multiple to the one, or of Creation to the Creator, saying: And as all things have been and have come from One, so all things are born from this single thing by adaptation. 1. Voyez la fin du chapitre ii. 2. Id. positive above analogous to below That which is below is like that which is above — 661 —
3Here in a few words is the entire teaching of the sanctuary on the creation of the World. Creation by adaptation, or by the quaternary, developed in the Sepher Jesirah 1 and in the first ten chapters of Moses's Bereshit 2. This single thing from which everything derives is the universal Force, whose generation Hermes describes: This thing, which he calls Thelema (Will), is of such importance that, at the risk of unduly lengthening this explanation, I shall show the opinion of several authors on this subject:
