1« The first companion is supposed to strike Hiram feebly with a ruler of 24 inches, image of the twenty-four hours that each diurnal revolution lasts: first distribution of time which, after the exaltation of the great star, feebly attempts upon its existence, dealing it the first blow. « The second strikes him with an iron square, symbol of the last season, figured in the intersections of two straight lines that would divide the zodiacal circle into four equal parts, whose center symbolizes the heart of Hiram, where the point of the four squares figuring the four seasons converges: second distribution of time which, at this period, deals a greater blow to the solar existence. « The third companion strikes him mortally on the forehead with a heavy blow of the mallet, whose cylindrical form symbolizes the year, which means circle, ring: third distribution of time, whose completion deals the final blow to the existence of the expiring sun. « From this interpretation, it has been concluded that Hiram, a metal-founder, become the hero of the new legend under the title of architect, is the Osiris (the Sun) of modern initiation; that Isis, his widow, is the Lodge, emblem of the earth (in Sanskrit loga, the world), and that Horus, son of Osiris (or of light) and son of the widow, is the freemason, that is to say the initiate who dwells in the earthly lodge (child of the widow and of the light). » « Thus the three treacherous companions betray their master as Typhon did with regard to Osiris, and it is said in the narration: Hiram presents himself at the western gate to leave the temple: this is precisely what the sun does; for, supposing this star takes up its dwelling in the sign of the Ram on the first day of spring, the last day of its triumph at the summer solstice, or the eve of its death, which occurs in Libra, it descends to the horizon through the western gate; and if I then examine the position that the Ram takes in the East, I shall see near it great Orion, arm raised, holding a club, in the attitude of striking. In the North, I shall see Perseus, weapon in hand and in the attitude of a man ready to strike a foul blow. I repeat, the murder of Hiram, taken in the figurative or allegorical style, is, like the passion of Osiris, like that of Adonis, of Atys and of Mithra, a product of the imagination of astronomer-priests, whose aim was to depict the sun's absence from the earth.
2« The tale presented to us concerning Hiram is complete, for the sky also shows us the nine masters who go in search of his body; and if one turns one's gaze toward the West of the horizon, when the sun sets in the Ram, one will see, around this constellation, Perseus, Phaeton and Orion. In thus following the constellations that adorn the sky in this position, one will notice, in the North, Cepheus, Hercules and Boötes, and in the East one will see appear the Centaur, the Serpent-Bearer and the Scorpion; all march with him, and follow him step by step until the moment of his new appearance in the East *. » 2° Moral sense. — The moral and religious sense of the Legend of Hiram has been glimpsed by all the great reformers of freemasonry. Thus, in an attempted unification of the various rites, entitled le Maître décoré en trois points, the candidate, questioned about the secret of the order, divides it into five distinct parts. « The first part relates to the exposition of natural, universal and immutable religion by means of symbols and maxims. » The legend of Hiram, in the effort of all these workers of different classes and foreign nationalities, contributing through their labors to raise the Temple of the one God, teaches all its adepts the tradition of the gnostics and of all the ancient initiates: the existence of the one Religion, of which all cults are manifestations. This is why the true freemason must be the enemy of sectarianism, whatever form it takes. The second part of the Masonic secret, according to the author I have just cited, relates to the secret of the operations of nature. This alludes to the hermetic and alchemical sense of the legend of Hiram, whose development I do not wish to undertake here. The third part of the secret is the perfection of the human heart, of which the temple is but an allegory. To this point one might attach the application, in the legend of Hiram, of the great law of compensations, figured by the resurrection of Hiram, the exile and punishment of the guilty. How often is the maxim, become popular, not railed against: Vice is always punished and virtue rewarded? Yet has not the knowledge of the law of Karma come to give immense support to this maxim, by showing that, in the invisible as in the visible, an action calls forth an equal reaction, and by proclaiming the similarity of physical laws and moral laws? 1. Lenoir, la Franc-Maçonnerie, p. 287.
3The fourth part of the secret relates to the solar myth of which we have already spoken. Finally the fifth part retraces the struggle of instincts and of will: « The victory of errors and passions over truth or virtue, and that of truth or virtue over errors and passions, likewise figured by the death and resurrection of Hiram (who is truth or virtue), which Hiram is struck by three villainous companions (who are ambition, falsehood and ignorance), drawn from the tomb and avenged by the nine virtuous masters (who are the laws and Masonic duties). » 3° Psychic sense. — The most important of the meanings that may be attributed to the legend of Hiram is unquestionably that which relates to the mysterious trials practiced in every sanctuary with a view to the development of the candidate's soul. The whole purpose of the legend is contained in this death of the just man, slain in secret, and in his dazzling resurrection. The principle of the Universe that presides over the destruction and change of forms, this principle known in every theogony and designated under the names of Siva, of Ahriman, of Typhon, of Nabash, of Satan, has been marvelously defined by Fabre d'Olivet: Destiny. The most terrible weapon that Destiny can oppose to the divinely all-powerful Human Will is Death. Initiation, in every age, has sought to attain but one goal: to instruct man and thereby render Destiny powerless in its attacks. At every step, the candidate of the mysteries of Eleusis was threatened with Death, and it was only by showing that he was always ready to undergo it that he attained the final revelations. One of the most terrible trials he had to endure was the following: Two glasses were placed before him. The high priest would say to him: « Son of the Earth, one of these two glasses contains a terrible poison. If you truly believe in the beyond, if you are not afraid to die, choose one of these glasses and drink. May the Gods protect you! » In case of refusal, the candidate was imprisoned until his death. Plato became famous among the initiates for the courage he displayed in this trial. The legend of Hiram shows us the development of this 1 mystery in this sage who dies rather than betray his secret, and who is resurrected immortal. Regarding the story of the grain of wheat, we
