Maçonnerie pratique, 2 vol. in-8°, 1885. 1— 689 — These latter, aided by the hermetic societies, had not ceased secretly to prepare minds for revolt against Roman sectarianism. This revolt suddenly broke out in Germany with Luther in 1517. The protection of a powerful prince, the Elector of Saxony, ensured the success of this undertaking, which, prepared long in advance by the secret societies, saw its success grow in prodigious fashion. The whole of northern Europe was escaping the Papacy; Germany, having become free, could serve as a center of action for the various hermetic associations. Thus we shall always see the successes of Protestantism in religion go hand in hand with the successes of Freemasonry, which will everywhere protect the descendants of the Elector of Saxony in recompense for the service rendered. In the initiation into one of the highest Masonic degrees, the candidate is indeed taught that Protestantism is one of the victories (cannon shots) won by Freemasonry over the Papacy. SUMMARY It was from Germany that all the so-called illuminist sects emerged, which would spread everywhere the doctrines of gnosticism and prepare the revenge of the Templars.
2★ * * Before going further, let us see what were, at the beginning of the eighteenth century, the various currents that possessed all or part of the esoteric Tradition. 1° The alchemical current, comprising several schools (alchemists, kabbalists, astrologers, etc.), regenerated by Paracelsus and Van Helmont. This current is chiefly intellectual and has for its aim freedom of scientific study. 2° The remnants of the Templars, obstinately pursuing the vengeance of Jacques de Molay upon the two assassins of the Temple: Royalty and the Papacy. 3° The fraternity of the Rosy Cross, possessing a large part of the primitive Christian tradition, explained by the Gnosis and the Kabbalah. We shall now see all these elements grouping together to found a secret society more powerful, socially, than all the preceding ones: Freemasonry. 44 \ — 690 — § 2. — ORIGINS OF FREEMASONRY. Freemasonry indeed presents to us the total grouping of all the currents we have studied up to now. There we shall find represented the Templars, the Alchemists, the Rosicrucians, allied with secret associations of builder-craftsmen. If one wishes to study all these traditions it is important not to do so in what remains of Freemasonry in France; we shall soon see the reason. For the moment, let us develop as best we can the historical origins of this new association. All authors agree on this point; representatives of gnostic societies (Ashmole among others) allied with lodges of builder-craftsmen founded Freemasonry. We borrow from a work published by Catholics and quite well done, though filled at times with venomous insinuations and naive calumnies, the following information1:
31° The Ancient Corporation of Builder Masons of Germany. From the ninth century up to and including the thirteenth century, the Monks — the Benedictines especially — monopolized the science of constructing great edifices2. Needing numerous personnel, they found themselves forced to make pupils among the laity3. The monks charged with this teaching were called Venerable, because they were religious; Masters, because they taught4. 1.
