1The medium was placed in an armchair and within a few minutes was plunged, without the intervention of any attendant, into a deep sleep. All at once a slight jolt shook his whole being, then he suddenly stiffened, to such a degree that he lay stretched horizontally across the arms of the rather wide chair, his shoulders on one arm of the piece, his legs on the other arm, in a position so similar to that of subjects placed in catalepsy that one would have had to be blind not to see the resemblance. The body then relaxed little by little and an incarnation took place. It was a suffering spirit, a man shot during the Commune who did not know he was dead. After the ordinary séance, following the fraternal advice given by one of the attendants, the medium's eyes suddenly closed again; he stiffened again suddenly as the first time, then relaxation set in little by little and a second incarnation, entirely different from the first, manifested itself. Let us summarize the phases through which the medium passed: 1° Waking. 2° Deep sleep. 3° Rigidity of all the limbs. 4° Incarnation. 5° Sleep (very brief). 6° Rigidity of all the limbs. 7° Incarnation, etc., etc. The awakening, when it occurs, always takes place immediately after the incarnation (phases 4 and 7). It is always the same circular series that manifests itself. In this last case, the cataleptic state, which was only — 879 —
2only indicated elsewhere, develops in an unquestionable way with all its characteristics. Now I do not fear to affirm that this observation is of very great importance for spiritists; for if it is proven, as I believe, that the medium represents a transcendentalized hypnotic subject, it becomes as easy as can be to form mediums, and, moreover, to form at will mediums for incarnation, or for materialization and apports; we shall see this presently. For the moment, we are going to set the hypnotic states in parallel with the states of the medium, along with the phenomena produced in both cases. TRANSITION FROM HYPNOTIC PHENOMENA TO SPIRITIST PHENOMENA Intuitions. — In the waking state, the subject, like the medium, is impressionable and intuitive. However, whereas the subject is content to feel intuitions without going any further, the medium seeks to formulate them to those present. 11 He develops this sense of intuition as much as he can, and progressively he comes to write down what he perceives, either consciously (intuitive writing medium) or, and this is more important, unconsciously (mechanical writing medium). Let us note well that the cause of this intuition escapes the analysis of materialist scholars and may just as well be due to a 'spirit' as to any other influence. But we have promised not to venture onto this ground, where reconciliation among all the schools has not yet been achieved. Table-rapping. — The phenomena of table-rapping produced in the waking state are peculiar to the medium and do not corre- — 880
3correspond to any hypnotic phenomenon, at least according to the present state of my research. Presentiments. — The medium, particularly developing the faculty of presentiments, which is only a variety of intuition, can come to make predictions that may come true. STATE OF SLEEP But all these phenomena occur in the waking state, and we can have no special action on subjects in this state. So we shall pass quickly to the study of the facts produced during sleep. 1° Lethargy. — During the period of lethargy, characterized by deep sleep, no important phenomenon is produced by the hypnotic subject. From the standpoint of the actions that arise within him, the loss of sensibility and the increase in muscular force may lead us to suppose that nervous force is condensed in the centers, and particularly in the motor centers (the anterior centers of the brain and of the spinal cord). Now, the experiments of M. Pelletier in France1, those of Crookes in England, those of the fakirs in India show the passage from hypnotism to spiritism. M. Pelletier shows us that several subjects, placed around a table and extending their hands above light objects, cause these objects (feathers, corks, etc.) to be able to move without contact and on command. The grouping of several organisms generating nervous force produces effects analogous to certain spiritist phenomena. 1. See the Revue Spirite and no. 8 of l'Initiation. — 881 —
