1Draw a circle, emblem of the sphere of the world, divide it into four parts by two lines at right angles, join the four points of these two lines by a cord so as to form a square. Draw through the center of the circle two lines at right angles that terminate at each of the four cords, and you will thus have the four arches of the four seasons, and each of these arches will have its hull, its nave, its deck, its mast, its rigging. Its hull will be the container, the ark; its nave will be the contained, time; its deck will be the lapse, the space, the distance; its mast will be its meridian, its solstice; its rigging will be its horizon. Now, time is Aon, and the spirit is Noa; therefore the ark of Noah is nothing other than the Eon-spirit of time. As proof that it is nothing else, measure its dimensions; and since it has 300 cubits in length, 50 in width, and 30 in height, strip the truth of the wisdom that covers it by removing the zeros, which, here indeed, are but nullities. Now, since there remains 353, tell yourself: the Judaic year then being composed of 7 months of 29 days and of 5 months of 30, total 353, the ark of Noah is indeed, like the argo of Colchis, nothing but the vessel of the spirit of time, measured by the spirit of man. You have thus understood how this vessel, containing Shem the moon, Ham the Sun and Japheth the earth, the spirit of man enclosed within it, together with itself, the Bodhas, cultivator or sower, the Zath, herdsman or Hamite, and the Meyde, artisan or Japhethite. Extract from Fabre d'Olivet on the same subject. « nnn a theba. It appears that it is the Samaritan translator who, in rendering this word as a vessel, was the first to give birth— 777 —
2birth to all the ridiculous ideas that this error has produced. Never has the Hebrew word תבה signified a vessel, in the sense of a ship, as it has since been chosen to be understood; but truly a vessel in the sense of a thing intended to contain, to preserve, another. This word, which is found employed in every ancient mythology, deserves particular attention on the part of the reader. It is of the kind whose great number of meanings always prevents the assignment of a determinate signification. It is, on the one hand, the symbolic name given by the Egyptians to their sacred city: Theba, regarded as the asylum, the refuge, the dwelling of the Gods; a famous city whose name, transported to Greece, onto a small town of Boeotia, sufficed to immortalize it. It is, on the other hand, a circuit, an orb, a globe, an earth, a coffer, an ark, a World, the solar system, the Universe, in short, which was imagined to be contained within a kind of vessel that was called — for I must recall here that the Egyptians did not give the Sun and the Moon chariots as the Greeks did, but a kind of round vessel. The vessel of Isis was none other than this Theba, this famous ark that occupies us at this moment; and, if it must be said, the very name of Paris, of this city where, at this moment, are concentrated the rays of glory that have escaped from a hundred famous cities, where, after long darkness, the sciences of the Egyptians, the Assyrians and the Greeks flower anew; the name of Paris, I say, is nothing but the name of the Thebes of Egypt and of Greece, that of ancient Syparis, of the Babel of Assyria, translated into the language of the Celts. It is the vessel of Isis (Bar-Isis), this mysterious ark which, in one way or another, ever bears the destinies of the world, of which it is the symbol. » * * *
3All these primitive peoples had their Arga, or ark, which they attributed to Xisuthrus and whose sanctuary was at Arguri, and it was from them that the Greeks copied their Argo, which they attribute to Jason; it is because this argo, expression of the dome of the vault of heaven, came to them with the Thibet — vault and dome of the earth — that the Hebrews, who attributed it to Noah and carried it with them from the mountains of Armenia, gave it the name Thabet-nah; but, as we shall see, this ark of Xisuthrus is nothing other than the symbol and emblem of the abstract measures of time, of which the world — 778
