I — 2. 0 — 6.
» — « ’Ev a ùtw x* toucsT ttxv rh nXvjpOjy.a TY}Ç 0cÔTT|TOÇ. » . .

1fecund germ, the divine germ of the Emanations. It was through Ennoia that the Abyss was to engender. For it was love, and love aspires to pour itself forth. And there is no love that does not desire something to love. III The Abyss therefore desired to pour itself forth, and with Thought it emanates 1' Intelligence, the Aeon Nous, the firstborn (Monogenes), alone capable of comprehending the greatness of its Dream. He is the first of the Aeons, the Arché, he is male, and God reveals himself through him. The act that emanates him at the same time emanates his companion, his kindred spirit, absolute Truth (Aletheia), a female Aeon beside the male Aeon, subjectivity beside objectivity. Thus is constituted the first Tetrad. I — 2. Sige-Ennoia (Silence and Thought). 3 — 4. Nous-Aletheia (Intelligence-Truth). This first tetrad is the interior, internal manifestation of the Absolute. The Aeons issued from God emanated in their turn as God does. Nous and Aletheia engendered the Word and the Life (Logos and Zoe). Logos and Zoe emanated the Human-Essence (Anthropos) and the Assembly (Ecclesia). One must know that Anthropos is Man-the-Archetype, of whom our Humanity is but a distant copy, and that Ecclesia is the Whole of the Cosmos. So that Anthropos, male, and Ecclesia, female, are the two archetypes of the world of Intelligence and of that of matter. This is the second tetrad. 0 — 6. Logos-Zoe. 7 — 8. Anthropos-Ecclesia. Together with the first tetrad, this second tetrad constitutes the Ogdoad, which condenses the ineffable beauties of the One, of the Absolute. IV Like their Father, the Aeons were to emanate, always by syzygy, by couple, by male principle and by female principle. Logos and Zoe accordingly emanated and projected: 1 — 2. — Bythios and Mixis. 3 — 4. — Ageratos and Henosis.
2S — 6. — Autophyes and Hedone. 7 — 8. — Akinetos and Synkrasis. 9 — -10. — Monogenes and Makana. These ten Aeons form the Decad. Anthropos and Ecclesia emanated and projected: 1 — 2. — Paraclutos and Pistis. 3 — 4. — Patricos and Elpis. o — 6. — Metricos and Agape. 7 — 8. — Aeinous and Sunesis. 9 — 10. -- Ecclesiasticos and Makarides. 11 - — 12. — Theletos and Sophia. These twelve Aeons form the Dodecad. The union of the Ogdoad, the Decad and the Dodecad, manifesting by successive and descending degrees the Absolute, constitutes the Fullness, or, to speak Valentinus's language, the Pleroma. Each of the Aeons is a hypostasis of the life of 1' the divine Abyss, a type that reproduces it, a mysterious rung by which to climb up to it. The Ogdoad is more elevated than the Decad, and the Dodecad less elevated. Valentinus said, with Paul (Colossians, II, 9): 'In it dwells the Pleroma of the divinity.' — '’Ev a ùtw x* toucsT ttxv rh nXvjpOjy.a TY}Ç 0cÔTT|TOÇ.' . . These notions contain the essence of the Theology of the great Valentinus. We must now expound, with the same simple and unaffected clarity, the cosmogony of this doctor of the Gnosis. V All the Aeons emanated from the Abyss did not know its essence, its nature. Alone, Nous (the intelligence) knew it, being the male principle issued from him and from Ennoia. 'No one,' say Matthew and Luke, 'knows the Father, except the Son.' (Matt., xi, 27; Luke, x, 22.) This perfect knowledge, however, was coveted by all the Aeons. They emanated from God, they strove toward Him, they loved Him, they were consumed by the insatiable desire to know Him. Nous would have imparted to them this perfect knowledge had the eternal Silence permitted him to do so. But he did not permit it.
3As a result of the emanation, as the emanated Aeons grew farther from their source, from the hearth of the Infinite, their ignorance of this ineffable mystery kept increasing and their languor kept growing. Their insatiable desire became a veritable suffering. This suffering, Sophia felt to an incalculable degree. She was the last Aeon of the Dodecad, the furthest from the Father, and by that very fact the most ignorant of the secret of her Nature. United to Theletos (will), she could not bear her male principle. She thirsted for the Abyss. She desired to unite with Him. She loved the source of the emanations, the father of the Aeons, the first Aeon. She struggled thus against the impossible. And in the passionate violence of this struggle, she would have been lost, annihilated, had not the Limit, the Aeon Horos, been sent to her by Sige (the Father). Horos brought Sophia back within the limits of her being, within the bounds of her nature. Emanated to restore the harmony of the Pleroma, disturbed by the languors of Sophia, Horos felt himself powerless to fulfill his whole mission, for, in her passion of unspeakable love, Sophia had already climbed the sublime rungs of the Fullness. Horos had to be helped. This is why Nous emanated a new couple, Christ and Pneuma (the Spirit). These two Aeons were to pacify the divine world of the Pleroma. Christ, appearing to the Aeons, explained to them the unfolding of the Absolute, its laws, its rules, its requirements, its norm. Thanks to him, the Aeons understood that the Absolute, incomprehensible in itself, cannot be perceived and grasped through its manifestations, its emanations, its successive becoming, and that its incommunicable essence resided in the eternal Sige (Silence). After Christ, Pneuma spoke to the Aeons and taught them holy resignation and the holy peace of acquiescence.
