6 Buddhi. Le ballon c’est le principe 7 Atma.

1des assistants est souvent considérée comme la mort véritable, and you often hear it said: « 11 a gardé toute son intelligence jusqu'au dernier moment. » This "last moment" is the one at which relations cease between the soul and the astral body. The extremities (hands and feet) grow cold little by little; life concentrates itself within the chest, around the thoracic ganglia, within its true sanctuary. It is at the moment when the vital influx ceases to be carried to the brain that the soul, deprived of the means of communication, seems forever vanished to those who do not realize what phenomenon has taken place. As soon as the rupture between life and the soul is accomplished, a change of state occurs for the human being, and not a true change of place. To understand properly the various phases of death, we shall once more consider the ternary constitution of man and the reciprocal functions of the three principles. The lowest of these principles, the body, has its center within the belly. From there it comes to link itself to the higher principle, life, within the chest 1. The mediating principle, life, has its center within the chest. It links itself, within the head, to the higher principle: the soul 2.'. Finally, the higher principle, the soul, has its center outside the human being (except in the case of adepts). Only the lowest portion of this principle plunges into man, and comes to place itself in relation with the mediating principle within the head. 1.
2303 The following figure shows us clearly these various relations. 1 The seven principles of man. Analysis of the Soul (A), of Life (V), and of the Body (C). One may consider the mediating principle, life, as terminated by two hooks: a superior one for the soul, an inferior one for the body. At the moment of death the superior hook detaches itself: the soul thereby breaks its relations with the body, then life soon does likewise. Then the soul rises toward the higher region (toward the more psychic states), the body returns to the Earth, to the material world, and life spreads out into Nature. 30i — The following figure indicates, very roughly, these changes. The essence of the soul, conceived exoterically, being to rise, that of life to spread out horizontally, and that of the body to descend, we shall choose a new analogical image that will throw light for us upon the transformations of our various principles. A balloon will represent the soul: for the essential quality of this balloon is to rise. A double hook will represent life; finally, a lead weight will represent the body. In the ordinary state, all these principles are united together; the heaviness of the material weight (body) corrects the lightness of the balloon (soul). The existence of the double hook (life) maintains the two opposites in a harmonic equilibrium. — 303 — This is what the following figure shows clearly. of the human being.
3If, according to this figure, one wishes to explain death, nothing could be simpler: each principle departs on its own side. This is the idea that comes first; but it is false, according to occultism. This idea is false because the intermediate principle, the astral body, divides itself in two; its upper part remains linked to the soul and rises with it; its lower part remains attached to the body and dissolves with it: what is more, 20 • • — 306 — it aids the body in its dissolution just as it aided it in its construction. If we remember that the seven principles are divisions of these three primordial ones, it will be 11e possible for us to classify them according to our analogical figure. The lead weight is the body 1 Rupa. The rod linking this weight to the higher principle is vitality 2 Jiva. The hook linking this vitality to the still higher principle is the astral body 3 Linga sharira. The middle portion of the intermediate double hook is the animal soul 4 Kama rupa. The hook linking this animal soul to the higher division is intelligence 5 Manas. Finally, the netting of the balloon is the substance immediately enveloping the divine principle; it is spirituality, the angelic soul. 6 Buddhi. The balloon itself is the principle 7 Atma.
