2D’autres signes sont employés par les initiés et par cela même indispensables à connaître ; ce sont les signes qui désignent les planètes. Ils sont d’autant plus importants que chacun d’eux peut s’expliquer par la géométrie qualitative dont nous venons de parler. Je n’aborderai point ici cette étude qui nous conduirait loin sans résultat immédiat pour m’occuper uniquement de leur génération. L’actif et le passif sont représentés dans les planètes parle Soleil (O) et la Lune (J). Leur action réciproque donne naissance aux quatre éléments figurés par la croix (f). b Saturne, c’est la Lune dominée par les éléments. % Jupiter, ce sont les éléments dominés par la Lune. cf Mars, c’est la partie ignée du signe zodiacal du Bélier agissant sur le Soleil. 9 Vénus, c’est le Soleil dominant les éléments. Enfin la synthèse de tous les signes précédents, c’est Mercure contenant en lui le Soleil, la Lune et les éléments. 3° — L’emploi de la géométrie qualitative permet encore une autre méthode : c’est l’emploi d’un seul et même signe qui peut être pris dans des sens différents suivant l’entendement du lecteur. Ainsi le signe O ne représentera pour l’illettré qu’un point dans un rond. Le savant comprendra que ce signe représente une circonférence et son centre ou, astronomiquement, le Soleil et par extension la vérité (il est rare que le savant dépasse ce degré). L’initié y verra le Principe et son développement, l’Idée — 602 dans sa cause, Dieu dans l'Éternité outre les sens précédents. Tout à l’heure nous verrons l’origine de ces interprétations.
3A ce procédé se rattache l’usage des ligures magiques appelées pantacles qui résument, grâce à la disposition de quelques lignes, des lois naturelles très complexes. C’était là le moyen employé par l’initiation pour conserver les enseignements toujours présents à l’esprit des initiés. Nous reviendrons plus loin sur ce point très intéressant. En somme, le caractère de cette méthode ésotérique, c’est l’enseignement unitaire, l’enseignement élevé correspondant aux sciences les plus hautes symbolisées dans la classification occulte par la lettre iod (>) du tétragramme sacré. Moïse, en sélectant son peuple, le gouverna presque uniquement d’après cette méthode ; delà l’unitéisme des Juifs et le caractère mâle et sauvage de leur organisation. La transmission de la tradition par l’initiation était certes excellente ; mais elle n’offrait pas toutes les garanties de durée désirables. En effet qu’un cataclysme politique vienne saisir les dépositaires de la Science, que leurs livres soient brûlés, et tout est perdu. Aussi à côté de la première voie de transmission, à côté de l’ésotérisme, une seconde fut créée : celle de l'exutérisme, à l’usage de la foule. 2Other signs are employed by the initiates and are for that very reason indispensable to know; these are the signs that designate the planets. They are all the more important as each of them can be explained by the qualitative geometry we have just discussed. I shall not venture here into this study, which would lead us far without immediate result, in order to concern myself solely with their generation. The active and the passive are represented among the planets by the Sun (O) and the Moon (J). Their reciprocal action gives birth to the four elements figured by the cross (f). Saturn is the Moon dominated by the elements. Jupiter, these are the elements dominated by the Moon. Mars is the fiery part of the zodiacal sign of the Ram acting upon the Sun. 9 Venus is the Sun dominating the elements. Finally the synthesis of all the preceding signs is Mercury, containing within itself the Sun, the Moon and the elements. 3° — The employment of qualitative geometry permits yet another method: that of the employment of one single and same sign which can be taken in different senses according to the understanding of the reader. Thus the sign O will represent for the unlettered only a point within a circle. The scholar will understand that this sign represents a circumference and its center, or, astronomically, the Sun, and by extension the truth (it is rare that the scholar goes beyond this degree). The initiate will see in it the Principle and its development, the Idea — 602 in its cause, God in Eternity, beyond the preceding meanings. Presently we shall see the origin of these interpretations.
3To this procedure is attached the use of the magical figures called pantacles, which sum up, thanks to the arrangement of a few lines, very complex natural laws. This was the means employed by initiation to keep the teachings ever present to the mind of the initiates. We shall return further on to this very interesting point. In sum, the character of this esoteric method is unitary teaching, elevated teaching corresponding to the highest sciences, symbolized in the occult classification by the letter iod (>) of the sacred tetragrammaton. Moses, in selecting his people, governed them almost exclusively according to this method; hence the unitarianism of the Jews and the male and untamed character of their organization. The transmission of tradition by initiation was certainly excellent; but it did not offer all the guarantees of durability desirable. Indeed, should a political cataclysm come to seize the depositaries of Science, should their books be burned, and all is lost. So, alongside the first path of transmission, alongside esotericism, a second was created: that of exotericism, for the use of the crowd. The truths of the sanctuary were in no way changed; a truth does not change itself on pain of becoming an error;
