The source text as printed, transcribed diplomatically. Where the source language uses a non-Latin script that reaches us only through a Victorian romanisation, this layer is labelled transliteration, because that is what we hold.
1VII T It remains for us to expound the Redemption, according to Valentinus. Our world, that of us Men, was redeemed by the Aeon Jesus. He came through the immaculate channel of the Aeon MiRiAM, whom we call Mary. The Aeon Jesus has nothing material about him. He is formed of a psychic principle borrowed from Demiurge and of an astral body. He is animated by Christ, who left the Pleroma and rested upon him, communicating to him absolute power over the world of Satan. His teaching redeemed and still redeems the Pneumatics. At the moment of the Passion, Christos, the impassible Aeon, sustained and strengthened him. The Cross (Stauros), become the boundary that separates the Pneumatics from other men, is the sacred symbol of the Gnosis. Such is, in its entirety, the doctrine of Valentinus. It answers every difficulty. Never has the Absolute manifested itself more luminously than in this admirable epic, which unfolds successively across the three worlds. It would remain to speak of Gnostic morality. Suffice it now to say that it proclaims God innocent of evil, of suffering and of injustice. The origin of Evil will furnish us with the matter for another study. May the Aeon that accompanies each of us enlighten us, illuminate us, purify us. Amen! Jules Stany Doinel.
2THE GNOSTICS OF ORLÉANS THE MARTYR STEPHEN 1 It was not without deep emotion that I discovered this year an authentic charter of the eleventh century, in the hand of one of the martyrs of the Gnosis, in 1022, the episcopal chancellor Stephen. Yes, in his own hand, as this subscription attests: stepuanus cancellarius scripsit: Stephen, chancellor, wrote it! Precious, unique relic of the chief of the French Gnosis! Incomparable and rare monument! Inestimable relic! So many churches proudly display the bones of saints, of Catholic saints, of Roman saints, that we too may well, with legitimate enthusiasm, display and venerate the characters, respected by Time, traced by the august hand of the victim of the ferocious successor of Hugh Capet and of the bishops of the synod of Orléans, his accomplices. II The charter is dated the month of February, the 29th year of King Robert. King Robert dated his diplomas by counting the years of his reign in three different ways. First, he counted from his coronation at Orléans, 25 December 987; then, from the captivity of the Carolingian Karl of Lorraine, 29 March 991; finally, from the death of Hugh Capet, 24 October 996 *. t. Paris, Vieweg, 1885, p. XLII.
3It is according to the first of these systems that our precious monument is dated. The month of February of the twenty-ninth year corresponds, in this system, to the month of February 1017, new style. In this year 1017, the episcopal seat of Orléans was occupied by a prelate whom the Catholic hagiographers call Saint Thierry II. He had been consecrated in 1016, by the Archbishop of Sens, Leotheric. Stephen, our blessed one, was chosen by him as Chancellor. This title conferred upon the chancellor the right to validate episcopal acts. Sometimes — as is the case here — he wrote the act in his own hand. The formula scripsit then attested this particular intervention. The formula subscripsit indicated only the visa. III The diploma written in the martyr's own hand bears the autograph signature of the bishop: S. Teoderici epi; that is to say: Seal of Thierry, bishop. It bears in addition the signa of the dean of Sainte-Croix, Ilotdulf; of the abbot of Saint-Avit, Irfrid; of the archdeacon Tedduin, of the archdeacon Gautier de Tedelm, clerk and episcopal provost; of the archdeacon Letald and of the subchanter Guarin. In itself, this venerable monument has only a domanial importance. Thierry II makes known that the monks of Saint-Mesmin de Micy had asked him for the concession, under conditions of quitrent, of a vineyard situated on his benefice of Saint-Pryvé, near Orléans. This vineyard still exists today in the place called Villaine — in loco qui dicitur Villena — beside the parish church, not far from the main road. But if the object of the act gives it no other value than that attaching to a feudal transaction, its form places it above the most precious documents, since the gnostic doctor of Orléans, the martyr of the stake of 1022, touched its parchment, wrote its text and consecrated its worth. The charter measures five centimeters in width by twenty-five in length. It is ruled with a dry point.
