15° The Asiatic group, one of the most important for its ardor in sustaining the struggle, illustrated by Cerdo and Marcion. This variety of doctrines comes from the fact that each initiate, each regional faculty, once freed from their oath of silence, sought to recover the totality of the tradition, with the little that they themselves possessed, of Occult Science. This is why the Egyptian group, directly derived from the primitive source, is the most advanced in knowledge and possesses almost integrally the tradition. Whereas Polytheism collapsed, leaving nothing but its books and its legends, Gnosticism was never annihilated. When the current of politically victorious Christianity seized the intellectual direction of the West, the Gnosis persisted in the state of a secret tradition transmitted within the mysteries of occult associations. We shall find it again under the name of Hermetic Philosophy throughout the Middle Ages; the Templars, who had gone to be initiated at the place of origin, were also Gnostics, just as the Freemasons will be later without knowing it. Of all the paths by which the tradition has been preserved, Gnosticism is thus one of the most powerful. We shall now give, in this connection, two recent studies by M. Jules Stany Doinel, a fervent apostle of these doctrines in our time, far more competent than ourselves in these matters. The first of these studies sets forth the system of Valentinus; the other shows, documents in hand, the survival of the Gnosis as a cult in the eleventh century. The reader will be grateful to us, we hope, for these two extracts. THE GNOSIS OF VALENTINUS To my brothers and my sisters of the Gnostic Church scattered in the darkness of this Hylic world. I I approach the gnosis of Valentinus. It is the complete gnosis. I approach it with faith, enthusiasm and trembling, for I feel that the hour has come when the Doctrine, long mute, long hidden, long persecuted, will cast
2— 628 — upon the men of this end of the century its salutary and liberating light. I thank Papus for having opened to me L'Initiation, for this gnostic apostolate. The day is not far off when I shall be able, with the aid of the Holy Eons, to expound in public, before the men of good will of the great and noble Paris, the Gospel for which have lived, struggled, suffered, wept, shed their blood, the martyrs, the apostles, the doctors and the initiates from Simon the Magus down to the glorious Albigensian. Our age is truly privileged. It sees the Kabbalah, Theosophy, Initiation, Astrology, Occult Science flourish anew. It witnesses a prodigious awakening. A whole constellation of eminent spirits shines in its psychic sky. Reviews, journals, books spread the light of the Orient over our western land. The Absolute manifests itself. Is it not just that the gnosis, which shone for several centuries and which has almost gone out, should reappear in its turn in the firmament of souls? I am but a voice proclaiming it; this voice will not resound in the desert. But let every profane person step aside. We do not cast the pearls of Ophir before the ignorant Hylics.
3II The principle of the Gnosis is this: the Absolute emanates the divine forces which are its hypostases. THESE EMANATIONS ARE PROJECTED IN COUPLES (Syzygies) OF DECREASING SERIES; THESE ARE THE AEONS. Aiôç xal touç Acwvaç, says Apollos in the Epistle to the Hebrews (t. II). In the beginning was the Silence, eternal Aeon, source of the Aeons, the invisible Silence, the unnamed, the ineffable, the abyss; common speech calls it God. Principle and cause, infinite, enveloped in itself, it did not act. But within its inviolate silence two 'generators,' the male principle and the female principle — the one, the male, illuminator from Above, the other, the female, illuminator from Below — contained the root, the source of Being, or rather were themselves the root and the source. The Abyss (Bythos), thus enveloping itself, contemplated itself with its co-eternal spouse, Thought (Ennoia). Silent as He, Ennoia received within that inexpressible embrace the — 629 —
