1— 618 — d’un peuple sans s’occuper du nombre successif de despotes qui avaient incarné ce principe, et le reste à I1 avenant. 11 suf(it de considérer attentivement l’origine de presque toutes les religions pour y trouver l’application de la même méthode. Un créateur, homme véritablement divinisé par le génie qu’il déploie dans les réalisations de son idée, pose les bases d’un nouveau culte qui doit avoir un triple but, scientifique, social et religieux. L’histoire de cet homme ne saurait être contée au jour le jour comme nous le faisons à notre époque. Tout étant réglé par la loi de l’analogie, c’est le principe ésotérique plus ou moins élevé, révélé par l' initiation , qui est décrit dans son évolution. Voilà pourquoi le début et la tin de l'histoire de Moïse sont purement mythiques. Il en est de même pour l’histoire d'Orphée. Il en est aussi de même, quoi qu’on semble prétendre, pour l’histoire de Jésus. On n’a pas voulu voir la partie exotérique , mythologique, du christianisme, et on a voulu faire admettre l’existence d’une étoile mystérieuse guidant trois mages, un rouge, un noir et un blanc, vers un petit enfant qui vient de naître et qui parle déjà. 11 est né d’une vierge le 25 décembre. C'est alors que les critiques et les savants, peu enclins au mysticisme de leur nature, sont venus, textes en mains, montrer que Jésus et Jcison sont bien synonymes, que Mit liras est aussi né le 25 décembre, d’une vierge pure en compagnie d’un bœuf, que Dionysios est aussi né le 25 décembre et que le jeune dieu, obligé de fuir, est bientôt emporté sur un âne en Egypte , par le vieux Silène;

1— 618 — of a people without concerning themselves with the successive number of despots who had embodied this principle, and the rest to match I1. 11 It suffices to consider attentively the origin of almost all religions to find there the application of the same method. A founder, a man truly deified by the genius he displays in the realizations of his idea, lays the foundations of a new cult which must have a threefold aim, scientific, social and religious. The history of this man cannot be told day by day as we do in our own time. Everything being governed by the law of analogy, it is the esoteric principle, more or less elevated, revealed by initiation, that is described in its evolution. This is why the beginning and the end of the story of Moses are purely mythical. It is the same for the story of Orpheus. It is likewise the same, whatever one may seem to claim, for the story of Jesus. People have refused to see the exoteric, mythological part of Christianity, and have wanted to make people accept the existence of a mysterious star guiding three magi, one red, one black and one white, toward a small child who has just been born and who already speaks. 11 he is born of a virgin on the 25th of December. It is then that the critics and scholars, little inclined by nature to mysticism, have come, texts in hand, to show that Jesus and Jason are indeed synonymous, that Mithras also was born on the 25th of December, of a pure virgin in the company of an ox, that Dionysos was also born on the 25th of December and that the young god, forced to flee, is soon carried off on a donkey into Egypt by old Silenus;
2finally that even before the existence of Jesus, a certain Krishna had had exactly the same adventures in India, date for date, astronomically speaking. Discovering the story of the same principle at the root of all these myths, contemporary criticism concludes from it that there was never any individual more real in one religion than in another, and that the man called Jesus has every chance of having been born in the brain of a few philosophers in search of a new cult. Against these critics, the theologians, deprived of their best means of persuasion, the stake, seek to quibble over the authenticity of the texts and end up denying the whole of mythology, in order to establish, as historical fact, the legend of the small child who speaks philosophy and of the star that descends to earth expressly to guide magi toward the bed of a virgin. The astronomer then protests together with the physiologist, and the theologian ends up resembling a young child who stubbornly insists to his parents that he was born in a cabbage, to their great amusement. This stubbornness of the Church in maintaining scientific impossibilities leads Science to deny all value to religions and to regard them as created by a few tricksters, in order to exploit human stupidity. All the sacred books are considered apocryphal, and the independent man, mocking the ignorance of the theologian and the negation of the scholar, blows his brains out as soon as he feels ill at ease on earth, in the hope, no doubt, of going to draw his information from better sources. A little experience suffices, however, to make one understand that trickery rarely builds lasting works endowed with a resistance as powerful as that of a religion. — G20 -
3If what precedes has been understood, one will see that behind the mythic legend there is an individual who manifested the principle whose evolution is recounted, and that for lack of distinguishing exotericism from esotericism, one risks understanding nothing more of all these origins. It is easy to deny Moses, to say that Pythagoras never existed and that Jesus is a myth. A few idle rabbis composed the Sepher, two or three unemployed professors of the period pooled their efforts to invent Greek philosophy, a few initiates created Christ between two bacchic dances, so be it; but Israel still stands, Greece illuminates Western intellectuality with its teachings, and Christianity has taken splendid flight, for a trickery of its time1. Let us reflect a little and we shall feel that there is a single head dominating each of these movements, just as there is only one for all the limbs of a man. On the day when there are headless men, I shall admit that a collectivity wrote the Odyssey or the Sepher, but until then, no. Study seriously the Life of the initiate who came to manifest the Principle of Christos in the West, what will you find there? 1° A mythic framework, enunciating a series of esoteric laws, corresponding to the course of the Sun if you will; 1. The artistic studies of the celebrated painter James Tissot are more convincing in favor of the existence of Christ than all the combined works of contemporary critics. — 621 —
