1Often he asks them to sing, which further increases the fluidic bonds among all the perispirits. At this moment, the medium, placed at the center of the attendants and completely surrounded by them, falls into catalepsy. All the persons present then feel quite clearly a sort of cool breath that runs through the whole chain in a certain direction. This is the fluidic current, formed by the perispirits, that establishes itself. This fluidic current, invisible to material spirits and visible to seers (somnambulistic subjects), circulates above the circle and within it. The voluntary influences then take hold of the medium's life, which has just escaped from his body, and the phenomena begin. The perispirit becomes visible. Small bluish lights appear within the circle, luminous hands show themselves, the material objects placed on the table tilt. Musical instruments circulate above the heads of the attendants, playing various tunes. These instruments can settle, in less than three seconds, successively on the heads of twelve persons forming the chain — a phenomenon impossible to obtain by trickery. What happens at this moment? The fluidic current that circulates above the attendants, and which is reinforced by their union in a chain — this current carries the objects like a true river as 1. I shall describe the principal phenomena obtained with a medium remarkable in every respect, Mme B. Hannecart. I was able to establish, under rigorous conditions of control, phenomena of apports, of materialization, of the removal of material objects without contact, etc. I have seen many mediums; this one is among the best I have encountered for physical phenomena. — P. 838 —
2while these influences act on their side by means of the perispirit of the medium. This idea of the existence of a true fluidic circulus is important enough to merit some attention. Can some facts come to support it apart from the vision of lucid subjects? Well, yes, and I shall cite to you on this subject two phenomena cited without explanation in the latest book of our friend, the defender of our doctrines in the French scientific world: Dr. Paul Gibier. In a séance at Auteuil, the medium Sch..., being in a trance, one hears various musical instruments moving about above the attendants. One of them, having wanted to seize a guitar that was passing above him, broke the chain. Instantly, the instrument fell on the imprudent man's head and split his forehead. Note that the absence of a chain exposes one to the same dangers; thus three young men, wishing to hold a dark séance while they were ignorant of all the principles of spiritism, placed themselves alone in an absolutely bare room, where there was only a small table and three chairs for them. During the first half-hour, nothing occurred; but, all at once, a great noise was heard; one of the young men let out a terrible cry, the others, frightened, hastened to light the lamps and found their companion fainted beneath the table, his head split open by the marble of the mantelpiece, which had come loose, no one knows under what influence. In this last case, even the most elementary knowledge of magic shows that if these young men had formed the chain, the danger would certainly have been less great. The fluidic circulus, absent at that moment, would indeed have averted it.
3— 859 — This is also why, in the preceding experiment, the breaking of the chain provoked the breaking of the circulus and the sudden fall of the object, a purely physical phenomenon. From all this it follows that before holding dark séances, one must know spiritism, just as before combining potassium chlorate and sulfuric acid, one must know what will happen, that is to say know chemistry. Moreover, mediums know the danger to which the abrupt breaking of the chain exposes them, and you all know how much they insist that the hands remain always entirely clasped, whatever happens, during the séances. Suppose now that, once the fluidic emanations of the attendants are well harmonized by five or six successive séances, you introduce a person foreign to the group — what happens? A certain time is needed for harmony to establish itself between this person and the group. During this time, everything remains in status quo; the medium, far from progressing, has more difficulty putting himself into a state of phenomenality, and, should the strangers become more numerous, the phenomena, far from progressing, diminish in intensity and eventually cease altogether. Remarks. — One should not, however, believe that the preceding remark applies dogmatically to all cases. It is chiefly in the formation of mediums that it has its full bearing, and in the phenomena of apports and materialization. When the medium is fully formed, he can approach any milieu without fear; the only result will be more or less fatigue for him. Such is the case of Eglinton, of Slade, of Home, of Mme Bablin, etc., etc. — 860
