1. 2DIVINATION CHAPTER XVIII THE VISIBLE AND THE INVISIBLE IN MAN As we are about to undertake the last part of our work, it seems useful to us to cast a rapid glance over the path traveled. Having established, through numerous citations easy to verify, the existence of a real science in antiquity, having said a few words about the method employed and its applications, we have sketched the most general doctrines of this science concerning the Universe, the Planets, the Races and Man himself. Embryology and Physiology have furnished us the elements for important deductions concerning Birth and Death, concerning the Soul and its origin, its earthly state and its evolution. It was then that, penetrating more deeply into the depths of these mysteries of Egypt, we found there a sacred language, common to all the initiates, a language of which the Hebrew of Moses seems to be one of the purest derivatives, if not the total reproduction. We have followed the various phases through which the transmission of the initiatory tradition passed, from Moses on the one hand, to arrive, by way of the Essenes, at Christianity,
3— 792 — from Orpheus, on the other hand, to arrive, by way of the mysteries of Egypt, at the Gnosis. Hermetic Philosophy, the Templars, the Rosicrucians and Freemasonry have allowed us to follow the trace of this initiatory tradition down to our own day, where it seemed forever lost, when the gigantic labors of Bailly, of Court de Gébelin, of Fabre d'Olivet and of a host of others came to give an entirely new impulse to the mysterious doctrine of the ancient Trismegistic University. It remains for us to approach the most hidden side of this tradition, that which touches upon the forces at work within the invisible world. For three years now we have already been preparing a great work on this particular point. We shall accordingly now take up rapidly the principal questions touching upon this subject, referring the reader, for technical details and lengthy developments, to the aforesaid treatise. We shall summarize, as best we can, what may be said concerning the World of the invisible; then we shall determine the method employed in Occultism for figuring the laws of esotericism by means of synthetic diagrams or pantacles, giving easy means, within everyone's reach, of explaining these apparently incomprehensible signs. So as to be as clear as possible, we shall start from man, the microcosm, who contains within himself, analogically summarized, all the laws of the Universe, and it is by rising from the knowledge of the visible and the invisible in man, and of their relations, that we shall come to better understand the action of analogous forces within the World. 1.
