18e name Elohim Sabaoth, which is also interpreted God of armies, not of war and of justice, but of piety and of concord; for both names, this one and the preceding, each have their term of army: Numeration Hod (praise and confession, decorum and great — 510 — renown), the left column is attributed to it. It influences through the order of the Archangels (or through that which the Hebrews call Bene Elohim, that is to say sons of the Gods) upon the sphere of Mercury, it gives brilliance and fitness of adornment and ornament and produces animals. Its intelligence is Michael, who was governor of Solomon. ★ * ¥ 9° name Sadai (all powerful and satisfying to all) or Elhai (living God): Numeration Jesod (foundation). It signifies good understanding, alliance, redemption and rest. It influences through the order of the Angels (or through that which the Hebrews call Cherubim) upon the sphere of the Moon which gives increase and decline to all things, which presides over the genius of men and distributes to them guardian and preserving angels. Its intelligence is Gabriel, who was conductor of Joseph, of Joshua and of Daniel. 10e name Adonai Melech (Lord and King): Numeration Malchut (kingdom and empire), signifies Church and Temple of God, and gate. It influences through the animistic order, that is to say of the blessed souls, named by the Hebrews Issim, that is to say nobles, Eliros and Prince; they are beneath the Hierarchies, they influence the knowledge given to the children of men and give them a miraculous science of things, industry and the gift of prophecy or, as others say, the intelligence Metatron which bears the name of the first creation or soul of the world; it was conductress of Moses.
2§ 4. — THE SEPHIROTH (according to Stanislas de Guaita) THE TABLE OF CORRESPONDENCES The Sephiroth. — Exposition of Stanislas de Guaita. It remains for us, to conclude what relates to this part of the Kabbalah, to speak of the numerations or Sephiroth. In this extremely remarkable work, one of the most learned among contemporary kabbalists, Stanislas de Guaita, has condensed important data both on the divine names and on the Sephiroth. This work is nothing but the analysis of a kabbalistic plate by Khunrath. We give first this plate on which the reader will be able to follow the developments given by de Guaita. — 512 —
3THE PLATE OF KHUNRATH ON THE ROSE-CROIX NOTICE ON THE ROSE-CROIX The kabbalistic plate offered as a premium to the subscribers of l'Initiation is extracted from a small, rare and singular in-folio, well known to collectors of illustrated old books and much sought after by all those who are concerned, on various grounds, with the esotericism of religions, the tradition of the secret doctrine beneath the symbolic veils of Christianity, and finally the transmission of the magical priesthood in the West. « Amphitheatrum sapientle æternæ, solivs veræ, christiano-kabalisticum, divino-magicum, necnon phgsico-chemicum, tertriunum, katholikon, instructore Henrico Keunratii, etc., Hanoviæ, 1609, infolio. » Unique of its kind, invaluable above all for curious researchers wishing to go deeper into these troubling questions, this book is unfortunately incomplete in a great number of its copies. We may perhaps be given credit for furnishing here some quick information, thanks to which the buyer may foresee and forestall a disappointment. ★ ♦ ■¥■ The engravings, in copper plate (l'Initiation intends to reproduce several of them for the benefit of its subscribers), the engravings, twelve in number, are ordinarily bound at the head of the work. They are grouped in an arbitrary manner, the author having neglected — perhaps deliberately — to specify their sequence. The essential thing is to possess them complete, for their arrangement varies from copy to copy. Three of them, in simple format: 1° the allegorical frontispiece framing the engraved title; 2° the portrait of the author, surrounded by likewise allegorical attributes; 3° finally, an osprey armed with spectacles, majestically perched between two lit torches, with two burning torches in saltire. Below, a rhymed legend in dubious High German, which one may translate: What use are torches and torches and spectacles To one who closes his eyes, so as not to see? Then come nine superb magical figures, very carefully
