1astral [Body] of the one evoked, and the communication is effected through the fusion of the plastic mediator of the subject serving as medium with the astral body of the evoked spirit, or rather with the portion of the astral body that still surrounds the soul after death (voy. chapitre précédent). The phenomenon being considered from this general point of view, it is indeed the soul, the departed's higher principle, that manifests itself. The spiritists, taking account only of the very general data, are thus right to claim that it is indeed the departed's soul that comes to answer the call of his relative or of his friend. When the theories of Occult Science, kept secret until then, began to become known to the general 344 —
2public, and to make numerous adepts, the spiritists were greatly scandalized to learn that the higher principles of man (the spiritual soul and the divine soul) have nothing to do with communications between the living and the dead. Data so abstract, set forth before the partisans of an entirely elementary philosophy, produced exactly the effect of a book of Kant or of Leibniz read before the pupils of a primary school. The first accusation leveled against Occult Science is that it is « far too difficult to understand, and far too complicated for the usual readers of spiritist books ». Another objection is the following: « The occultists dare to claim that the human being splits into several entities after death, and that what comes to communicate is not the whole being, but a fragment of the being — an astral shell! » To shed light properly upon this question, and to avoid any misunderstanding, a little reflection suffices, however. Of how many principles is man constituted, according to spiritism? Of three: the Body, the Perispirit, and the Soul. Where are these principles lodged? Within the three segments of the organism: Belly, Chest, Head. Comb through all of Allan Kardec, run through the works of every spiritist philosopher, and nowhere will you find mention that there exist, outside of man, principles not yet incarnated. — 345 — If one wished to represent the constitution of man according to spiritism, this is how one would do it:
3The figure placed beside this one shows, on the contrary, the origin of this discussion, based upon a misunderstanding. The 6° and the 7e principle, not being incarnate within man, are not part of his self; they constitute what is called the higher unconscious, the self being contained within the 4e and 5e principle, corresponding exactly to what a spiritist calls a spirit. After death, each of these groups evolves within a — 346
