1-these last two principles are, however, always linked one to the other; we shall soon see how. To sum up, let us say that, just as there exist three quite distinct planes within the Universe, there exist three evolutions corresponding to these planes: 1° The Material Plane. (In which the physical body 2° The Astral Plane. (will pursue its evolution. Personal or Moral Plane. (In which the self pursues 3° The Divine, or impersonal, Plane. (its evolution. (In which the higher self pursues its evolution.) The following figure sums up this data. State of man after death. — 35(5 What good, one will ask us, is this higher self, distinct from the self? Here is a source of gibberish in which no one can make himself understood. We shall show only one side of the question, the others requiring more space than we can devote to this study. The primary doctrine of occultism teaches us the theory of reincarnation. Man reincarnates himself several times in the course of his progressive evolution. If now we suppose that John has died, that his Spirit, having accomplished its astral evolution, has reincarnated itself, with its perispirit, as certain spiritists maintain, within the individuality of Peter, what will happen if John is evoked by the procedures of Necromancy and of Spiritism? Must Peter fall asleep at that very instant, and send forth from himself the primitive individuality of John, with its perispirit? The problem becomes still more complicated if, instead of the immediately preceding incarnation, one seeks the one that precedes it by 10 to 12 rungs within the series. It is because occultism answers all these difficulties best that we have been anxious to set forth its teachings on this subject. ★
2According to the doctrine of Karma and of Reincarnation, the evolution of man may be compared to a long vertical stem, cut across by small horizontal stems. The great vertical stem represents this divine principle, the higher self, which passes through every personality, and which carries good or ill fortune into the following individuality, according to the conduct of the preceding individuality. — 357 — Each of the small horizontal bars represents one of the numerous selves traversed by the divine Principle in the course of its evolution. Thus, if I was John in a previous existence, and I am Peter in this one, it is not John's personality that served to constitute my present personality; the divine principle alone, which was within John, is within me, or rather is above me, and constitutes my ideal, just as this principle will be within the future personality I shall have. The social position and the "fortune" of each personality will thus depend upon the conduct of the previous personality; but this does not prevent each of the personalities thus generated from preserving intact its whole individuality, its whole self, within the astral plane. The higher Principle, evolving in a different direction, cannot in any way hinder the evolution of the various personalities to which it is always linked, just as the string is linked to the beads of the rosary through which it passes. At the moment when the solar system is about to enter into its period of rest, the higher Principle, the higher self, may see manifested to it all the selves it has evolved, and make the total synthesis of the merits and demerits acquired lit- 358 —
3tle by little during its evolution. But here we approach a question outside our subject. To sum everything up, let us note carefully the ease with which the objection raised a moment ago is resolved by the theory of the indefinite conservation of vibrations generated, at any given moment, within the astral plane. Each of the personalities persists, linked to all the others through the higher Principle, but independent of the others in its particular evolution. The Egyptian cross found upon the Tarot best represents this theory, the vertical branch figuring the higher self, and each of the horizontal branches a particular self, with its own special plane of evolution. The Universe and God. Occultism enters into details just as numerous concerning the Universe and concerning God. The spiritists, whose doctrine touches upon these problems only very slightly, were somewhat intrigued by the conclusions of the occultism section of the Congress regarding the Universe and God. We cannot, for lack of space, enter into great detail on this subject; a few words are nonetheless necessary to determine the primordial elements of this teaching. Occultism teaches that everything is alive, from the most solid matter up to God. A perpetual exchange takes place among all beings, the — 339 —
