1and that makes it ardently desire to preserve or extend it. 'Nahash is rather, if I may express it so, that radical egoism which drives a being to make itself the center and to relate everything to itself. 'Moses says that this sentiment was the sweeping passion of elemental animality, the secret mainspring or the leaven that God had given to nature. 'Nahash harym would not be a distinct, independent being, such as you have depicted Lucifer according to the system Manes borrowed from the Chaldeans and the Persians; but rather a central mobile force given to matter, a hidden mainspring, a leaven, acting in the depths of things, which God would have placed in corporeal nature in order to elaborate its elements.' Such is the force that will drive Adam to invade, with his mind, the creative science. Why does this science cause his downfall? Fabre d'Olivet answers with a comparison, then with a discourse by Adam to Cain. 'Life and science are equally good; but they require to be joined suitably and proportioned to one another. 'Although a child enjoys life from the moment of its birth, its life, still weak and, so to speak, at its dawn, does not have enough vigor to withstand the least shocks of body and soul that it will bear later. If one considers this child from the standpoint of food, one sees that it needs only light milk, and that, were it given anything else, were one to attempt to nourish it in the same manner as a grown man, it would inevitably be killed. What holds for the body likewise holds for the soul. If too early it experiences the shocks of strong passions, it succumbs to them. The mind — 917
2is in the same case. Science, which is its portion, must be given to it with care. To wish that a child know, in its tender youth, what it should know only as a man, is to ruin it. 'The Eternal God, my son, had given life and science to man; but life in the flower of adolescence, and science only in germ. 11 He wished that the one should develop with the other, and that they should together attain their highest degree of fullness and perfection. Man knew that this was so, and even that it could not be otherwise. He knew that a precocious science would endanger his life and might even take it from him. As for that absence of life called death, he had only a confused idea of it. All he conceived of it was that it was a fearsome state. A fatal event, of which it is useless to give you an account, because it can concern you only in its results, and because you 11e would not understand it in its principle, since you are still only a child — having placed all science within my reach, I could not resist the desire to possess it. Carried away by a blind passion, and believing I could escape the danger that threatened me, I seized the fruit that was offered to me. My audacity outran time, and my mind did indeed invade science. But the prediction of the Eternal God came to pass; my too-feeble life succumbed under the weight with which I had burdened it. It could grow no more; it had to decline. An eternal decline is the most horrible of sufferings. The Eternal God spared me this by deigning to change the mode of my life. Then you were born. Without the event of which I have told you, you would not have been born, Eve would not be your mother, your brother would not have seen the light of day, and the whole of humanity that must be born of you would not have existed.' These premises established, Fabre d'Olivet can now approach
3— 918 — the exposition of his ideas on the origin of evil and its remedies: 'Thus, then, the evils with which humanity finds itself unfortunately afflicted are the consequences of an accident, and did not at all enter, in principle, into the plan of the Creator of the World (as Lucifer would have it understood, in order to exonerate himself for having brought them about). These evils are not eternal, since they are confined within a limited time; they diminish progressively in intensity as humanity expands, both in time and in space, and they will end by disappearing entirely, merging with what geometers call the infinitely small; in the same way, to use a tangible comparison, a pound of salt, which would strongly salt a bucket of water, will salt very little a cistern, almost not at all a pond, and not at all a river.' The Hindus know these three forces quite well, designated thus: Providence will bear the name of Brahma (creator). Human Will will bear the name of Vishnu (preserver). Destiny will bear the name of Shiva (destroyer). The following two extracts will show the application of these ideas to Astrology, which would require a whole volume to develop properly; so we shall merely mention it here. The divinatory science par excellence is Astrology. If one recalls the data of Pythagoras's doctrine concerning Liberty and Necessity, it will be easy to see the theoretical reasons that guided researchers in these studies. As everything in Nature is analogical, the laws that guide the Worlds in their course must likewise guide humanity, this brain of the Earth, and men, these cells of humanity. Nevertheless the empire of
