1is that we are now in a position to prove scientifically Allan Kardec's assertion, coming after Paracelsus and Van Helmont, that the perispirit is the intermediary between the soul and the body. Life and the perispirit are two identical words designating one and the same thing, and to study the perispirit is to study life. Now, to study life is to practice magic, as Barlet showed quite recently, citing the illustrious Pole Wronski. You see, then, that we are squarely within our subject: practical magic, of which spiritism is an abridged translation, as I was telling you a moment ago. Life, then, has properties unknown to contemporary scholars? Certainly, and that is precisely the key to this theory which we shall soon reach. PROPERTY OF THE PERISPIRIT. — THE MEDIUM The perispirit or life — it is the same thing, we have just seen. I may therefore make use of either of these terms indifferently, in what follows. We have seen that life, carried by the blood in the organism, was the intermediary between the body and the will, or, as we say, that the perispirit was the intermediary between the body and the soul. But is life contained solely in the blood? Not in the least. As I had the honor of telling you last September, in a lecture at the Congress, a part of human life is held in reserve, entirely ready to 'give' in case of danger or of great physiological effort. This reserve is placed in a series of nerve ganglia connected to one another and spread throughout the entire organism. The whole of these ganglia is — 8S2 —
2called in medicine the ganglionic nervous system, or the great sympathetic. The principal centers of this great sympathetic are situated around the heart (solar plexus) and in the belly. The perispirit now appears to us in its entirety, exactly doubling each organ, and so intimately bound to the organism that, if one were to draw the whole of its realm, one would obtain the exact double of the human being. Does this perispirit, however, have no other functions than these, and does it interest us only as the intermediary between the will and the body, that is to say between spirit and matter? Not at all, and it is here that the formula presents itself to us that gives the explanation of the role of mediums in spiritist phenomena. This formula may be summarized thus: Life can, under certain conditions, go out of the human being and act at a distance. This is what I shall now try to demonstrate to you. * * * You are all familiar, Ladies and Gentlemen, with that experiment of the fakirs of India who place themselves in catalepsy before a seed contained in a small mound of earth, in the middle of a room. You know that in less than two hours, the seed has sprouted, a stalk is born that covers itself with leaves, then with flowers, and finally a fruit appears that ripens and that one can eat. These are supernatural things, we would say, if we did not know better than anyone that the supernatural does not exist and that everything in nature is quite natural, that it — 853
3is up to us to discover the laws of. What, then, took place in this experiment of the fakirs? Occult Science answers us pertinently on this subject. The fakir's life went out of himself; directed by his will, it was projected onto the seed, and this seed, which normally took a year to produce a fruit under the influence of vegetable life, took only two hours under the influence of human life. Recently, you were able to read in the Revue Spirite the experiments of M. Pelletier who, putting three subjects to sleep and placing them around a table, sees light material objects move without contact and on command. What happens? His will takes hold of the life of the three subjects and directs the force of these three perispirits onto the material objects, which move under this influence. We must indeed remember that a spirit (will and soul) can act on matter (the body) only by means of a perispirit (vital force). Another way of verifying this fact consists in taking a sleeping subject, electrically isolated, and asking him to describe his impressions. The subject sees the perispirit perfectly, that is to say the life gone out of the medium by the left side (at the level of the spleen), and it acts on material objects according to the impulses that the perispirit receives. Can we, from these data, see what a medium is? A medium is nothing other than a machine for releasing perispirit, and this perispirit serves as intermediary and means of action for all the wills, visible or invisible, that know how to seize hold of it. This point has been very judiciously elucidated by M. Donald Mac Nab in his studies — 834 —
