1the high priest joined to the priesthood the genethliac or astrological science, and carefully concealed, in the depths of the sanctuary, the principles of this science. It was a state secret among the Etruscans and at Rome, as it still is in China and Japan. The Brahmins confided its elements only to those whom they judged worthy of being initiated. 'Now, one need only set aside for a moment the blindfold of prejudice to see that a universal science, everywhere bound up with what men recognize as most sacred, cannot be the product of folly and stupidity, as the crowd of moralists has repeated a hundred times. 'Antiquity as a whole was certainly neither foolish nor stupid, and the sciences it cultivated rested on principles which, though totally unknown to us today, existed nonetheless.' The Chinese likewise possess this data on the three forces and their action. This point, moreover, is very little known. So we shall say a few words about it. THE RIGHT TRIANGLE There exists a pantacle known from the highest antiquity in China: it is the right triangle whose sides have a special length. They are respectively 3, 4, and 5, so that the square of the hypotenuse, 5 X 5 ~ 25, is equal to the square of the other sides, 3 X 3 = 9 and 4 X J = 16; 16 + 9 = 25. But the meaning attributed to this pantacle does not stop there; the numbers indeed have a mysterious significance that may be interpreted thus. 3, the idea, allied to 4, the form, balances out to 5, the Pen- 1. 2tagram, or Man; or, in another interpretation: Absolute Essence 2, plus Man 4, balances out to Evil 5. One sees that this last interpretation differs from the first only in the application of the same principles to a lower world, as the following arrangement shows: Idea-Essence Form-Man * Man-Evil. The study of the Pentagram suffices, moreover, to explain these apparent contradictions. We give, as a curiosity, the Chinese book Tcheou-Pei, based on the data above. It is extracted from the Lettres Édifiantes (vol. 26, p. 146, Paris, 1783). The missionary who translated it declares it to predate the burning of the books, 213 B.C. Claude de Saint-Martin published a mystical commentary on it in his Traité des Nombres (Dentu, Paris, 1863). As one can see, this book is based on the 22 keys of the Book of Hermes. THE 22 TEXTS OF THE CHINESE BOOK TCHEN-PEI 1 'Anciently Tcheou-Kong questioned Chang-kao and said: I have heard it said that you are skilled in numbers; it is said that Pao-hi gave rules for measuring the sky. 2 'One cannot climb to the sky; one cannot, with foot and thumb, measure the earth; I pray you tell me the foundations of these numbers. — 924 3 'Chang-kao said: 4 'The Yu-en (round) comes from the Fang (square); 4 zz 10. 5 'The Fang comes from the Ku. 6 'The Ku comes from the multiplication of 9 by 9, which makes 81.
3P* CD O £ O 'If one divides the Ku in two, one makes the Keou, wide as three, and a kou long as four. A King line joins the two Keou sides; Kou makes the angles; the King is five. 8 'See the half of the Fang. 9 'The Fang, or the Flat, makes the numbers 3, 4, 5. 10 'The two Ku make a long Fang of 25; this is the total Tsi-ku of the Ku (5 X 5 zz 25). 11 'It is by the knowledge of the foundations of these calculations that Yu brought the Empire into good order. 925 — 12 'Tcheou-Kong said: This is indeed great; I wish to know how to make use of the Ku. Chang-kao replied: 'The Ku, planed and smoothed, is for leveling the level. 13 'The Yen-ku is for seeing the height or the elevation. 14 'The Fou-ku is for measuring the depth. 15 'The Go-ku is for knowing the distance. 16 'The Ouan-ku is for the round. 17 'The Ho-ku is for the Fang. 18. 'The Fang belongs to the domain of the Earth. The Yu-en belongs to the domain of the sky; the sky is Yu-en, the earth is Fang. 19 'The calculation of the Fang is fixed. From the Fang comes the Yu-en. 20 'The figure Ly is for representing, describing, observing the sky. The earth is designated by a brown and black color. The sky is designated by a color mixed of yellow and flesh-red. 'The numbers and the calculation for the sky are in the figure Ly. The sky is like an envelope; the earth — 1)26
