But Ripe Age arrives, that which is rightly called the age of reason; for this new element begins to manifest itself. Then Passion develops still further, with all its consequences — enthusiasm, devotion, etc. — illumined as it is by intellectuality. The Senses, having attained the summit of their development, come under the dependence of the elements that dominate them. One sees why it would have been dangerous for the Senses to reach their apogee before the birth of intellectuality. Then time passes further still. The turning-point of Old Age arrives, a difficult turn to negotiate, for it casts man definitively into the abyss dug by his vices, and then egoism, envy, and avarice show themselves, « or the human monad is saved for a long time ». The Senses are put to sleep, but the heart vibrates more than ever to noble sentiments; the faculty of understanding Nature and the Sciences, Intellectuality, has developed, while at the same time is born one of the loftiest faculties the human race can evolve in the present age: Spirituality, thanks to which man, losing for an instant consciousness of his individuality, is capable of allowing himself to be consciously sacrificed for the moral development of his fellow men. After this comes death, following which evolution continues. In exceptional cases, man may, through his all-powerful Will, push this development further still during Life.
