1humaines.
This word which the Israelites never pronounce and which the high priest said once a year amid the cries of the profane people, is the one found at the summit of all initiations, the one that radiates at the center of the flaming triangle at the 33° Masonic degree of Scottish Rite, the one displayed above the portal of our old cathedrals; it is formed of four Hebrew letters and reads iod-hé-vau-hé. It serves in the Sepher Bereschit or Genesis of Moses to designate the divinity, and its grammatical construction is such that it recalls by its very constitution1 the attributes that men have always delighted in giving to God. Now, we shall see that the powers attributed to this word are, up to a certain point, real, since it easily opens the symbolic door of the ark which contains the exposition of all ancient science. It is therefore indispensable for us to enter into some details on this subject. This word is formed of four letters, iod (>) hé (n) vau hé (n). This last letter hé is repeated twice. To each letter of the Hebrew alphabet is attributed a number. Let us see those of the letters that concern us at this moment. The hé = 10 The hé = 5 1 The vau = 6 The total numerical value of the word is thus i 0 — {— 5 — j— 6 — j— S = 26 Let us consider each of the letters separately. 1. « This name offers first the indicative sign of life, doubled, and forming the essentially living root EE (Hn). This root is never used as a noun and it is the only one that enjoys this prerogative. It is, from its formation, not only a verb, but a unique verb of which all the others are but derivatives: in a word the verb ni (EVE) to-be-being. Here, as we see, and as I have taken care to explain in my grammar, the sign of intelligible light 1 (Vô) is in the middle of the root of life. Moses, taking this verb par excellence to form from it the proper name of the Being of Beings, adds to it the sign of potential manifestation and of eternity * (I) and obtains HirV (IEVE) in which the facultative being is found placed between a past without origin and a future without end. This admirable name thus signifies exactly the Being-who-is-who-was-and-who-shall-be. » (Fabre d'Olivet, Langue hébraïque restituée.)
2500 — THE 10D The iod, figured by a comma, or else by a point, represents the principle of things. All the letters of the Hebrew alphabet are but combinations resulting from different assemblages of the letter iod1. The synthetic study of nature had led the ancients to think that there existed but a single law directing natural productions. This law, the basis of analogy, posited unity-principle at the origin of things and considered these only as reflections at various degrees of this unity-principle. Thus the iod, forming by itself all the letters and consequently all the words and all the sentences of the alphabet, was justly the image and the representation of this Unity-Principle whose knowledge was veiled from the profane. Thus the law that presided over the creation of the language of the Hebrews is the same as that which presided over the creation of the universe, and to know the one is to know implicitly the other. This is what one of the oldest books of the Kabbalah tends to demonstrate: the Sepher Jesirah 2. Before going further, let us illustrate by an example this definition we have just given of the iod. The first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, the aleph, is formed of four iod opposed two by two. It is the same for all the others. The numerical value of the iod leads to other considerations. The Unity-Principle, according to the doctrine of the kabbalists, is also the Unity-End of beings and things, and eternity is, from this point of view, but an eternal present. Thus the ancient symbolists have figured this idea by a point at the center of a circle, representation 1. Voy. la Kabbala Denudata. 2. Translated into French recently for the first time. 3of the Unity-Principle (the point) at the center of eternity (the circle, line without beginning nor end1). According to this data, Unity is considered as the sum of which all created beings are but the constituent parts; just as Unity-Man is formed from the sum of millions of cells that constitute this being. At the origin of all things the Kabbalah thus posits the absolute affirmation of being by itself, of the Self-Unity whose representation is the iod symbolically, and the number 10 numerically. This number 10 representing the Principle-All, 1, allying itself with the Nothing-Naught, 0, corresponds well to the conditions required2. THE HÉ But the Self can only be conceived through its opposition with the Non-Self. Scarcely is the affirmation of the Self established, than one must at once conceive a reaction of the Absolute-Self upon itself, from which will be drawn the notion of its existence, by a sort of division of Unity. Such is the origin of duality, of opposition, of the Binary, image of femininity as unity is the image of masculinity. Ten dividing itself so as to oppose itself thus equals 10 — = o, five, the exact number of the letter Hé, second letter of the great sacred name. The Hé will thus represent the passive in relation to the iod which will symbolize the active, the non-self in relation to the self, the woman in relation to the man; substance in relation to essence; life in relation to the soul, etc., etc. THE VAU But the opposition of the Self and the Non-Self immediately gives birth to another factor, which is the Relation existing between this Self and this Non-Self.
