1is found beneath this envelope, and this figure or instrument serves to know the true situation of the sky and of the earth. 21 'He who knows the earth is called wise and skillful. He who knows the sky is called truly wise, free of passions. Knowledge of the Keou-Ku gives wisdom; through it one knows the earth; through this knowledge of the earth one attains knowledge of the sky and becomes truly wise and free of passions; one becomes a Sage. The sides Keou and Ku have their numbers; knowledge of these numbers proves knowledge of all things. 22 'Tcheou-Kong said: There is nothing better.' SUMMARY In summary, everything in Magic comes down to the development of the will and the application of this action to Nature. What are the methods of this development? One can see, in Hamlet, a scene in which a courtier wishes to act upon souls, when, as the hero disdainfully points out to him, he does not even know how to draw sounds from a wooden instrument. It often happens that those who occupy themselves with these questions receive a note worded thus: 'Sir, could you enable me, by return post, to master the elements and to be superior to other men?' What would a great painter say if asked to make an 'artist' of a peasant's son in a few days? All the arts require preparatory study. It is the same for Magic. We shall, moreover, furnish all
2the known methods of training the will in our Traité Élémentaire de Magie Pratique. For now, we shall summarize everything preceding by citing the conclusions of three authors: first those of Wronski, one of the most eminent thinkers of the nineteenth century; then those of a theosophical writer, a former medium who, despite her love of violent polemic, managed for once to depart from her less-than-praiseworthy habits: H. P. Blavatsky; and finally those of Fabre d'Olivet, a Western author more profound than all the Hindu theosophists combined and, moreover, entirely unknown to them. 3Note on Theosophy. Final identity in the systematic union of the evocation of Agathodemons and that of Cacodemons by means of the evocation of the life common to them. Mystical Technie. Mystical organization of harmony in order to take part in the march of creation. Mystical Association. A. — Ends or aims of the mystical association. a2 Principal end, hyperphysical. Participation in creation. b2 Accessory or physical end: Direction of the destinies of the earth. b Means of the mystical association. a2 Principal means. Secret societies. b2 Accessory means. Use of mystical works. Note on the Aims. a* The principal aim of the mystical association follows immediately from the theoretical determination of mysticism, as we have given it above, as consisting in the mystical limitation of the absolute reality, observing that limitation generally forms the neutralization between the privation and the granting of reality! And it is in pursuing this principal aim that the mystical societies, in order to take part in creation, cultivate supernatural sentiments and arts such as autopsy, teletic poetry, hermetic philosophy, magnetic healings, palingenesis, etc., and certain mysteries of physical generation, etc. a2 Secret societies. Being unable to practice or discuss publicly the supernatural efforts that the mystical association makes to take part in creation, because, at the very least, the public would laugh at it, and being equally unable to openly direct earthly destinies because governments would oppose it, this mysterious association can act only by means of secret societies. Thus, as it is conceived nowadays, it is from the stage of mysticism that all the secret societies which have existed and which still exist on our globe are born, and all of which, moved by such mysterious springs, have dominated and continue, despite governments, to dominate the world.
