1— 684 — ration the sacred deposit that had been entrusted to them, there exist various currents emanating from men who went to be initiated at the very sources of the Tradition and who then return to rejuvenate, with their contribution, the central current that continues in the West. It is with hermetic philosophy as it was with Greece, whose great minds would go to undergo initiation in Egypt and would then return to infuse new intellectual blood into their homeland. It is thus of the greatest importance, to avoid all confusion, not to enumerate names in a mere list, but to distinguish clearly the central current from these accessory currents, which are nonetheless among the most important. It is thus that Raymond Lull (1235-1315), initiated by the Arabs into the secrets of the book of Hermes-Tau (the Tarot), teaches his Ars magna, or the art of replacing the human brain with a mathematical machine, an art that would form the substance of university teaching for four centuries. It is thus that Paracelsus (1495-1541) would return from his travels enriched with new light. But two men interest us above all others from this standpoint; these are those who went to draw the pure gnostic tradition at its very source and who created serious currents of initiative under this influence. These two men are Hugues de Payens, the founder of the Order of the Temple in the twelfth century, and Rosenkreuz, the founder of the Order of the Rosy Cross in the fourteenth century. The hermetic current did indeed possess the kabbalistic tradition allied to the Gnosis, as the works of John Dee prove; but the occupation of these philosophers was entirely intellectual, none of them dreaming of any social realization capable of struggling on equal terms against the ignorant usurper of spiritual power: the Church. The Templars. — The seven crusader founders of the Order of the Temple, initiated in Palestine itself into the secrets of the Gnosis, laid the foundations in 1418 of the Power that nearly succeeded, as early as the fourteenth century, in realizing the secret aspirations of the initiates. The Templars wished to reestablish the ancient university organization of antiquity. In every important center a commandery was established; several commanderies were governed by a priory; several priories were grouped under the orders of a t. Above all his Monas Hieroglyphica, in which he shows that the life of Christ is based on the solar myth, image of the universal law.
2— 085 — great priory governing the Province. The grand priories in turn grouped themselves by nation, speaking a different language, and the whole was governed by the central power headed by the Grand Master. Thus peoples speaking various tongues received intellectual impulse from a single center, and the aim of this impulse was not the a priori obscuring of intelligences, but rather their emancipation through charity and through science, the two pivots of the Order of the Temple. This was a direct attack upon the Church and the Papacy; the latter sensed the danger and employed a radical means. On the 13th of October 1307 Philip the Fair had the Templars arrested throughout the entire territory and had them burned after a summary trial. In 1312 Pope Clement V dissolved the order administratively. The Gnosis had not been able to succeed socially up to that point because it had no soul; it was not constituted as a complete being; it did not exist as an efficient power in the invisible. The voluntary martyrdom of Jacques de Molay gave to the gnostic current this directing soul that it lacked; this current suddenly became all-powerful, through its very enemy, and we shall find it again with the Reformation and with the French Revolution. Let us note well the essentially realizing character of the Order of the Temple. After its destruction, several of its initiates who had escaped the ordeal founded the first of the great secret fraternities of Europe, excepting, however, the Holy Vehm, which dated from Charlemagne,
3Christian Rosenkreuz, born in 1378, had been raised by a circle of German initiates who knew that great hermetic centers still survived in the lands of the East. Scarcely twenty years old, Rosenkreuz set out, heading straight for the sources of the Gnosis. He successively traveled through Turkey, Palestine, Arabia, everywhere gaining admission to the centers of initiation. At Damcar he at last discovered the so-long-sought center where he received the definitive complement of the esoteric Tradition. The young initiate then went also to Fez, where the Kabbalah was taught, then returned by way of Spain to his native country, Germany. There he unveiled his doctrine to a small number of initiates and shut himself away in a cave, where he died in 1484 at the age of 106. — 686 —
