1second causes or laws, and a very great number of facts. Thus second causes are governed by a very restricted number of first causes. The study of these latter is, moreover, entirely disdained by the contemporary sciences, which, confined to the domain of sensible truths, abandon their pursuit to the dreamers of every school and every religion. And yet it is there that Science resides. We need not discuss, for the moment, who is right or who is wrong; it suffices for us to note the existence of this threefold gradation: 1° The infinite domain of FACTS; 2° The more restricted domain of LAWS, or second causes; 3° The still more restricted domain of PRINCIPLES, or first causes. Let us sum all this up in a figure *: Scientific Intellectualism Scientific Synthetism Scientific Elementarism Superlative sense Comparative sense Positive sense This gradation, based on the number Three, plays a considerable role in ancient science. It is upon it that the domain of analogy is, in large part, founded. And so we must give some attention to its developments. These three terms are found again in man, in the body, the life, and the will. t. Tirée de la Mission des Juifs, p. 32. - 81
2Any part whatever of the body, a finger, for example, can be withdrawn from the influence of the will without thereby ceasing to live (radial or ulnar paralysis); it can likewise, through gangrene, be withdrawn from the influence of life without ceasing to move. Here, then, are three distinct domains: the domain of the body; the domain of life, exercising its action by means of a series of special conductors (the great sympathetic nerve, the vaso-motor nerves) and localized in the blood corpuscle; the domain of the will, acting through special conductors (voluntary nerves) and having no influence over the organs essential to the maintenance of life. We can, before going further, see the usefulness of the analogical method for illuminating certain obscure points, and here is how: If any thing whatever is analogous to another, all the parts of which that thing is composed are analogous to the corresponding parts of the other. Thus the ancients had established that man was analogous to the Universe. For this reason they called man microcosm (small world) and the Universe macrocosm (great world). 11 s'ensuit que, in order to know the circulation of life in the Universe, it suffices to study the vital circulation in man; and, conversely, in order to know the details of the birth, growth, and death of a man, one must study the same phenomena in a world. All this will seem quite mystical to some, quite obscure to others; and so I beg them to be patient and to refer to the following chapter, where they will find all the explanations necessary on this subject. The idea of the three worlds recurs too often in writers on occultism not to deserve a special glance. 6
3— 82 — What is meant by these three worlds? What are they? Under this name of worlds are designated three particular planes, three special states of existence, and not three places. There are three of these worlds or states: 1° The physical world; 2° The astral world; 3° The intellectual world. A rather crude example, but a fairly suggestive one, is that of water. In the state of ice, when it is solid, water well represents the physical world. Increase the power of the force imprisoned within this ice by heating it a little, and you will see its state change. The water liquefies, its conditions of existence change. The piece of ice stood by itself wherever you placed it, and had a shape of its own, whereas now the liquid water needs a vessel to contain it, and takes the shape of that vessel. Heat it further and the state will change again; the water, visible only a moment ago, will become invisible in the form of vapor, and will rise into the air. This image is crude, but it guards against an error that keeps many readers from understanding Occult Science: the belief that worlds are places. Thus, at death, man passes into the astral plane, into the astral world. This does not mean that he thereby changes location. Just as water, a moment ago, in passing from the solid state to the liquid state, changed very little in place, so likewise man, in passing « into the astral », changes state. His con- — 83 —
