11° Teachings of the Kabbalah on Man. The Kabbalah teaches first of all that man represents exactly within himself the constitution of the entire Universe. Hence the name Microcosm or Little World given to man, in opposition to the name Macrocosm or Great World given to the Universe. When one says that Man is the image of the Universe, this does not mean that the Universe is a vertebrate animal. It is of constitutive principles, analogous and not similar, that one wishes to speak. Thus cells of very varied forms and constitutions group together in Man to form organs, such as the stomach, the liver, the heart, the brain, etc... These organs likewise group together among themselves to form apparatuses that give rise to functions. (Grouping of the lungs, the heart, the arteries and the veins to form the apparatus of circulation, grouping of the cerebral lobes, the marrow, the sensory nerves and the motor nerves to form the apparatus of innervation, etc.).
2Now then, according to the method of Occult Science: analogy, the objects that follow the same law in the Universe will be analogous to the organs and apparatuses in Man. Nature shows us beings, of very varied forms and constitutions (mineral beings, vegetable beings, animal beings, etc.,) grouping together to form planets. These planets group together among themselves to form solar systems. The interplay of the Planets and their satellites gives rise to the Life of the Universe, just as the interplay of the organs gives rise to the Life of Man. The organ and the Planets are thus two analogous beings, that is to say acting according to the same law; however God knows whether the Heart and the Sun are different forms! These examples show us the application of kabbalistic data to our exact sciences; they are part of a larger work in progress for nearly five years now and which is far from finished. Let us therefore limit these developments on analogy here and return to the constitution of the Microcosm, now that we know why Man is so called. The Kabbalah regards Matter as an addition created subsequently to all beings, because of the Adamic fall. Jacob Boehme and Saint-Martin have sufficiently developed this idea among contemporary philosophers that it is unnecessary to dwell on it too long. However this fact had to be established in order to explain why, in the constitution of Man, none of the three principles stated represents the matter of our body. Man, according to the Kabbalists, is composed of three essential elements: 1° An inferior element, which is not the material body since essentially matter did not exist, but which is the principle determining material form: NEPHESCH. 2° A superior element, divine spark, the soul of all idealists, the spirit of occultists: NESCHAMAH. These two elements are to each other like oil and water. They are of such different essence that they could never enter into relation with one another, without a third term, participating in both their natures and uniting them c i. As in chemistry the alkaline carbonates unite oil and water through saponification.
33° This third element, mediator between the two preceding, is the life of scholars, 1'espirit of philosophers, the soul of occultists: RUAH. Nephesch, Ruah and Neschamah are the three essential principles, the ultimate terms at which analysis arrives, but each of these elements is itself composed of several parts. They correspond roughly to what modern scholars designate by: The Body, Life, the Will. These three elements nonetheless synthesize themselves within the unity of the being, so that man can be represented schematically by three points (the three elements above) enveloped within a circle thus: Now that we know the opinion of the Kabbalists on the constitution of Man, let us say a few words about what they think regarding the two following points: Whence does he come? Whither does he go? M. Franck develops these two important points very well. Man comes from God and returns to Him. We must therefore consider three principal phases in this evolution: 1° The point of Departure; 2° The point of Arrival; 3° What happens between the Departure and the Arrival. 1° Departure. — The Kabbalah always teaches the doctrine of Emanation. Man is thus primitively emanated from God in the state of pure Spirit. In the image of God constituted in Force and Intelligence (Chocmah and Binah), that is to say in positive and negative, he is constituted male and female, Adam-Eve, forming at the origin a single being. Under the influence of the fall 1 two phenomena occur: 1. The too limited scope of our study does not allow us to go deeper into this metaphysical data and to analyze it scientifically. See, for more details, the Caïn of Fabre d'Olivet.
