3Reportons-nous aux quelques mots sur l'alchimie du chapitre XIII et nous comprendrons tout à fait. D’autres phrases sont aussi faciles à réduire pour celui qui connaît les rapports, tout en restant incompréhensibles pour le profane. Ainsi l’Alchimiste ne dira jamais : changer le Solide en Liquide, mais bien : convertir la terre (solide) en eau (liquide). Il résulte de cela que beaucoup d’ignorants prenant les phrases alchimiques à la lettre et lisant : Tu changeras l'eau en terre et tu sépareras la terre du feu, se sont ruinés avant d’avoir trouvé le moyen de changer l’eau en humus ou de séparer la terre du feu. Ils n’ont pas peu contribué à jeter sur la Science occulte le discrédit dont elle jouit aujourd’hui. Il ne faut pas encore aller bien loin pour trouver des gens instruits qui professent gravement que la physique des anciens se réduisait à l’étude de leurs quatre éléments, terre-eau-air-feu. Ce sont ces gens qui trouvent si obscurs les livres hermétiques et pour cause. Si l’on a bien compris l’emploi de la méthode analogique, on verra de suite l’importance des tableaux qui indiquent de suite les rapports entre les divers objets. Ces rapports étaient d’une utilité extrême dans la pratique de certaines sciences antiques, entre autres la Magie et l’Astrologie. Quand, par suite des persécutions du pouvoir arbitraire, les initiés furent obligés de sauver les principes de leur science, ils composèrent d’après les astres un livre mystérieux, résumé et clef de toute la science antique, et livrèrent ce livre aux profanes sans leur en donner la clef1. Les alchimistes comprirent le sens mystérieux de ce livre et plusieurs de leurs traités, entre autres les douze clefs de Basile Valentin, sont basés sur son interprétation. Guillaume Postel en retrouva le sens et l’appela la Genèse d'Henoch 2, les Rose-Croix le possédèrent également3 et les initiations élevées n’en ont pas perdu le secret comme le prouvent les ouvrages du théosophe de Saint-Martin 4 établis d’après ces données. Hence a great confusion arises in the minds of those who see two facts, apparently discordant, placed side by side, as in the following phrase: Our androgynous mercury is the child of the bearded Sun and of the Moon, its companion. What relation can there be between this metal, the planets, and the generation attributed to them? 3Let us turn back to the few words on alchemy in Chapter XIII and we shall understand fully. Other phrases are likewise easy to decode for one who knows the correspondences, while remaining incomprehensible to the uninitiated. Thus the Alchemist will never say: change the Solid into the Liquid, but rather: convert earth (solid) into water (liquid). It follows from this that many ignorant people, taking alchemical phrases literally and reading: Thou shalt change water into earth and thou shalt separate earth from fire, ruined themselves before finding the means of changing water into humus or of separating earth from fire. They have contributed not a little to casting upon Occult Science the discredit it enjoys today. One need not go very far to find learned people who gravely maintain that the physics of the ancients was reduced to the study of their four elements, earth-water-air-fire. It is these same people who find the hermetic books so obscure, and for good reason. If one has properly understood the use of the analogical method, one will at once see the importance of the tables that at once indicate the relations among the various objects. These relations were of extreme usefulness in the practice of certain ancient sciences, among others Magic and Astrology. When, as a result of persecutions by arbitrary power, the initiates were obliged to safeguard the principles of their science, they composed, based on the stars, a mysterious book, summary and key to all ancient science, and delivered this book to the uninitiated without giving them its key1. The alchemists understood the mysterious meaning of this book, and several of their treatises, among others the twelve keys of Basil Valentine, are based on its interpretation. Guillaume Postel rediscovered its meaning and called it the Genesis of Enoch 2; the Rosicrucians likewise possessed it3, and the higher initiations have not lost its secret, as the works of the theosopher Saint-Martin 4, established according to this data, prove.
