Koot Hoomi Lal Sing. (Sinnett, Occult World, p. 85-95, Lond. 1883.)

1that man can shape his own future destiny himself, and know with certainty that he can live again after death, should he know how to will it, and that every phenomenon is but the manifestation of natural law, whose study and comprehension are the duty of every intelligent being. Koot Hoomi Lal Sing. (Sinnett, Occult World, p. 85-95, Lond. 1883.) CHAPTER XVI IMPORTATION OF THE ESOTERIC TRADITION INTO EUROPE THE GYPSIES A point of history very little known, and which we have hitherto refrained from approaching, is the influence of the Gypsies upon the tradition. A professor at the University of Bucharest, M. J. A. Vaillant, following long years spent among the Gypsies, gathered a series of traditions which he has published in various works1. What is curious is that, in studying these traditions closely, one finds in them, disguised beneath the theory of the solar myth, a very clear summary of everything we have said thus far concerning: 1° The value of proper names; 2° The common origin of the various mythologies; 3° The esotericism of the Bible. We cannot, then, better summarize all that precedes than by publishing this tradition of the Gypsies touching upon the various points with which we have thus far been concerned. This is what we shall now do as the conclusion of our general study on Tradition. I. Les Rômes, the true history of the true Gypsies; the Bible of the Gypsies; a magic key to fiction and to fact. 49 - 770 —
2ORIGIN First of all, here is what the Gypsies relate concerning their origin: There is, from the Sind to the Ganges, a territory called Panjab, that is to say five waters, because in the south five rivers — the Sutlej, the Ravi, the Chenab, the Jhelum and the Sind — water it and fertilize it, and because in the north five great rivers — the Iravati, the Brahmaputra, the Ganges, the Sind and the Gilson, which take their source there — flow forth to form the belt of the then-civilized world. This territory is the Multan, that is to say the land of the root. It is so named because it is the cradle where man was born into the life of the spirit, and where his spirit caused him to be born into the life of the body; where science was born from evidence, fable from allegory, and the image from the idol, from the imagination of the idea. Toward the eleventh century before our era, the Zaths were already withdrawn into the Doab, or Mesopotamia, between the Jumna and the Ganges. In their need for a God, and finding none, they made one of the sun, which, for them, is the star of needs, and they named him Isa-Kristen, because his light is brilliant as gold, pure as air, and diaphanous as crystal. They have him conceived by Maha-Maria, the great Mary, sea or celestial ocean containing the light of the world, and have him born of the planet or moon-goddess Devaki, who brought him into the world on the 25th of December, at midnight, in the city of Mythra, on the banks of the river which, for these reasons, was named Jemma and Gemma of Night and of Birth. According to them, when he was born, a celestial glory illumined his parents and his cradle, just as the sun illumines the stars at the antipodes when it goes below the horizon; the choirs of the Devatas, stars or angels, shepherds of men, made resound around his cradle the divine harmonies of their sublime concord, as the shepherds of the flocks will sing around the cradle of Jesus; his birth inspired tears in tyrants, as that of Jesus will inspire in Herod; for fear of letting him escape, Komsa, his uncle and king of Zath, as Herod will be of the Jews, ordered the massacre of all newborns; the massacre took place, but it could not reach him who was to be the Savior of men, because he is the star Deva, or God, of the world. To hide him from the Herod, king of the land, his parents carried him off to Gokal, city of cows, just as those of Jesus will carry him to the pastures of Goshen, to shield him from the Komsa of Judea; he lived there, withdrawn among the shepherds,
3— 771 — like Apollo among the herds of Admetus, and, like him, he taught them to play the flute; returning later to Mathura, as Jesus to Jerusalem, he there astonishes, as he does, by his knowledge and his miracles, and the love he inspires wins him, as it does Jesus, numerous followers; but his kingship is contested, as that of Jesus must one day be, and he dies upon a cross, upon that same cross where, a thousand years later, Jesus must die. It is then that he leaves his instructions to Arjuna, his beloved, as Jesus Christ left his to John, whom he leans upon his heart. Whether they came into Phoenicia by the Persian Gulf and Syria, or by the Gulf of Aqaba and Arabia, the fact remains that they arrived there with their ark or vessel, with their argosy or their science, the one bearing the other, for their great divinity Astaroth is nothing other than the Indo-Tartar Tan-tara, the tarot of the Roma, the zodiac. The name of Sanchuniathon, their historian and perhaps their lawgiver, alone suffices to prove their Indian origin, for it seems to us to be nothing but Sankon-iatha or Sanko-niatha, the Jatha or the perfect master1. Moreover the Tohu-Bohu, or chaos, out of which, according to his cosmogony, the world arose, recalls all too well the muddy matter, the goddess Buto of Egypt, and the earthly bout, the muddy matter of the Multan, so that one cannot fail to recognize in it at once the place from which, as Pali and Anak, they brought the idea into Palestine or Canaan, and that from which, as Kna or Anakim, they imported it into Egypt. RELIGION. — TRADITION They have no other book than Heaven, no other letters than the Stars, no other angels than the Light of the stars, no other prophets than the seasons and the months, no other priests and no other pontiffs than the Sun and the Moon, no other God than Light, no other master than God, no other temple than the World.
