Dans certains points les avis de cet auteur diffèrent des nôtres, mais ces différences sont trop légères pour que nous y attachions plus d’importance qu’il n’en est besoin. Ancus Marcius is this first crescent of the moon of Mars which, having fallen from Colchis or the Troad into Italy, naturally served as the model for the eleven ancilia, full moons or shields which, measuring the year (sal), bring about the salvation (salut) of men, and gave rise to the institution of the twelve Salian priests. Tullus Hostilius is the earthly hostility of men toward one another, expressed by the legend of the Horatii and the Curiatii. Servius Tullius is the earthly servitude of the weak beneath the strong, of the Albans beneath the Romans.
