La force sanguine, sublimée par le cervelet (théorie du docteur Luys), est transformée en fluide nerveux et prend deux grandes directions suivant le point d’incitation. Si ce point d’incitation est dans le sens , le courant produit est centripète. L’excitation traverse le ganglion médullaire postérieur et gagne soit le cerveau postérieur (circulation consciente), soit la substance grise postérieure de la moelle et, de là, la substance grise antérieure (circulation réflexe). Si l’excitation a gagné le cerveau, un courant nerveux s’établit, courant dont la physiologie n’a pas encore déterminé toutes les conditions, et la circulation psychique prend naissance. Le résultat de cette circulation psychique est la production d’une idée, agissant du dedans au dehors comme l’objet matériel, origine de la sensation, agissant du dehors au dedans. Le courant part du cerveau antérieur par les fibres de, projection de premier ordre, traverse les ganglions cérébraux où il se renforce, suit les cordons moteurs de la — 223
2moelle antérieure, puis les nerfs moteurs et arrive aux organes à fibres striées. Dans le cas où l’excitation passe directement de la moelle postérieure (substance grise) dans la moelle antérieure (substance grise) il n’y a rien de correspondant à la circulation psychique. La sensation se transforme en mouvement, mais la puissance du mouvement et sa diffusion dépendent uniquement de la grandeur de l’excitation. La force nerveuse en excès est drainée et condensée par le système spécial du grand sympathique dont les ganglions et les plexus répondent en tous points aux ganglions et aux plexus lymphatiques. C’est encore grâce à ce drainage parti des parties grises antérieures de la moelle, que la force nerveuse, agissant par saccade dans les circulations précédentes, est transformée en une force continue, agissant sur les organes à fibres lisses. Enfin au bas des trois segments nous trouvons : 1° La portion extra-péritonéale du gros intestin avec l’anus, organe d’excrétion de la circulation alimentaire et de l’abdomen en général ; 2° Le rein et la vessie avec leurs conduits, organes d’excrétion de la circulation sanguine et de la poitrine en général ; 3° Les testicules, les vésicules séminales et les conduits annexes que nous sommes amené à considérer comme les organes d’excrétion rapide et instantanée de la force nerveuse. On peut suivre un à un tous ces détails sur le schéma d’ensemble qu’on trouvera dans la planche ci-jointe. Having set out from the organs by way of the venous capillaries, the blood reaches the right heart, charging itself along the way with matter under the influence of the suprahepatic vein and the thoracic duct. — From the right heart, the blood passes, through the ventricle, into the lung, where it charges itself with force, and finally sets out again from the lung, laden this time with the two elements it had lost: force and matter. 3° Peripheral segment. The blood force, sublimated by the cerebellum (Dr. Luys's theory), is transformed into nervous fluid and takes two great directions according to the point of stimulation. If this point of stimulation is on the sensory side, the current produced is centripetal. The excitation crosses the posterior medullary ganglion and reaches either the posterior brain (conscious circulation), or the posterior gray matter of the spinal cord, and, from there, the anterior gray matter (reflex circulation). If the excitation has reached the brain, a nervous current is established, a current whose conditions physiology has not yet fully determined, and the psychic circulation comes into being. The result of this psychic circulation is the production of an idea, acting from within outward, just as the material object, the origin of sensation, acts from without inward. The current sets out from the anterior brain by the first-order projection fibers, crosses the cerebral ganglia, where it strengthens itself, follows the motor cords of the — 223
2anterior spinal cord, then the motor nerves, and reaches the organs with striated fibers. In the case where the excitation passes directly from the posterior spinal cord (gray matter) into the anterior spinal cord (gray matter), there is nothing corresponding to the psychic circulation. Sensation transforms itself into movement, but the power of the movement, and its diffusion, depend solely upon the magnitude of the excitation. The excess nervous force is drained off and condensed by the special system of the great sympathetic nerve, whose ganglia and plexuses correspond, at every point, to the lymphatic ganglia and plexuses. It is likewise thanks to this drainage, setting out from the anterior gray matter of the spinal cord, that the nervous force, acting jerkily in the preceding circulations, is transformed into a continuous force, acting upon the organs with smooth fibers. Finally, at the bottom of the three segments we find: 1° The extra-peritoneal portion of the large intestine, with the anus, the organ of excretion for the alimentary circulation and for the abdomen in general; 2° The kidney and the bladder, with their ducts, the organs of excretion for the blood circulation and for the chest in general; 3° The testicles, the seminal vesicles, and the accessory ducts, which we are led to consider as the organs of rapid and instantaneous excretion of the nervous force. One may follow, one by one, all these details on the overall diagram to be found in the accompanying plate. It sums up, as well as can be done, the whole of our essay, and we hope the reader will be so good as to excuse whatever errors of detail may be found there, given the overall idea we have striven to represent. — • 224 —
3REMARKS To this study we shall add a few words. It will be noticed that the diagram shows, within the microcosm itself, the existence of the three worlds; each of the worlds corresponds to one of the letters of the sacred tetragrammaton rtliT (iod, hé, vau, hé). Above, the world of the idea, comprising the brain and its ganglia, the cerebellum, and the psychic circulation. This world corresponds to the letter iod [Iod]. In the middle, the world of Life, comprising the lungs, the heart, the organs of circulation, with the great sympathetic nerve as the reserve center of the astral body (nervous fluid held in reserve). This world corresponds to the letter vau (1), which means bond. Below, between the diaphragm above and the peritoneum below, the world of matter, comprising the organs situated within the abdomen and the material reservoirs of the organism. This world corresponds to the letter hê (il). Here, then, are three of the letters of the tetragrammaton: the iod (head), the hé (belly), the vau (chest). Where, then, is the second hé to be found? In connection with our study of the Tarot, we showed that the minor arcana indicated the constitution of the human body. The originality of our work stems chiefly from the discovery of the functions of the second hé, acting as the center of transition, of generation, from one world to the other.
