1GENERAL IDEA OF THE PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSTITUTION OF MAN It is now that we shall call upon western occultism, in the person of one of its most illustrious representatives: Fabre d'Olivet, by showing how the anatomical and physiological data we have just established throw an entirely new light upon his psychological data. It is by starting from this double concordance that we shall presently call upon oriental occultism, to show its unity with all the data previously acquired. We have seen that the body manifests itself to consciousness through sensation. By what do the two other elements, Life and Will, manifest themselves to this consciousness? Life has its principal seat, as we have seen, in the Chest. Now, when you feel violent grief or intense love, where do you feel yourself touched? In the heart, popularly speaking; in the great sympathetic nerve (cardiac plexus), scientifically speaking 1 ; in the astral body, esoterically speaking; and there, indeed, is found the seat of feeling, which is to Life what sensation is to the body. 1. Claude Bernard, la Science expérimentale. — 196 —
2The will manifests itself likewise to consciousness through the freedom to act or not to act, called by Fabre d'Olivet: Assent. The characteristic sensation of the body manifests itself through need. Feeling paints itself through passion. Assent, through inspiration. Man is thus driven by necessity, passionate, or inspired, according to the center that reflects itself in his consciousness. But our analysis must not stop there. Sensation causes us Pleasure or Pain, according to the way our body is impressed. Well then, feeling likewise causes us Love or Hate, according to the way Life is impressed. Assent likewise reveals to us Truth or Error, according to the way the Will is impressed. Sensation, Feeling, and Assent — is this not one and the same thing, variously « colored » according to the milieux from which it emanates? Likewise Pleasure, Love, and Truth are the same thing considered positively from various points of view, just as Pain, Hate, and Error are this same thing considered negatively from these points of view. Let us stop here these digressions on the Body, Life, and the Will — digressions we might push quite far with Fabre d'Olivet. It suffices for us, for the moment, to have established the unity of these three differing principles. We shall now be able to draw important conclusions from this. Before passing to other considerations, we must sum up what we have said in three figures. It is the same original figure: the triangle that serves as the basis for our three diagrams, so as to show clearly that they express the same — 197 — thing, considered in three different aspects, body, life, or will, according to the case.
3Schematic figure summing up the constitution of Man, according to Fabre d'Olivet. (The ie sphere is missing, the sphere of free will; voy. plus loin.) Beings, whatever they may be, are formed, in the final analysis, of three constituent parts: the body, the life or spirit, and the soul. The evolution of a body produces a life; the evolution of a life produces a soul. Let us verify this data by applying it to man. Each continent, I repeat, crowns itself with a different race of men, representing the highest term of material evolution upon the planet.
