11. Fabre d’Olivet, Lang, héb., p. 29, t.
Sepher Jesirah ). 1° Trois mères : L’A (Aleph) L’M '(Le Mem) Q Le Sh (Le Schin) lï; 1. Fabre d'Olivet, Lang, héb., p. 29, t. I. — 483 — the various parts that constitute this general key of which we have spoken, then we shall speak of the philosophical system. Kabbalists can be divided into two categories. Those who have applied the principles of the doctrine without lingering to develop the elementary foundations, and those who, on the contrary, have made classic treatises on the Kabbalah. Among the latter we may cite Pico della Mirandola, Kircher and Lenain. Pico della Mirandola divides the study of the Kabbalah into the study of numerations (or Sephiroth) and the study of divine names (or Shemoth). It is indeed to these two points that the whole key is reduced. Kircher, R. P. Jesuit, is one of the most complete authors on this question; he adopts the general division into three great parts: 1° Gematria or the study of transpositions; 2° Notarikon or the study of the art of signs; 3° Themurah or the study of commutations and combinations. Lenain, author of the Science cabalistique, treats above all of the divine names and their combinations. We shall give the plans followed in these various works after our exposition, for, at present, most of the divisions would not be well understood. ,» § 2. THE HEBREW ALPHABET THE TWENTY-TWO LETTERS AND THEIR MEANING
2The starting point of the whole Kabbalah is the Hebrew alphabet. The alphabet of the Hebrews is composed of twenty-two letters; the letters, however, are not placed at random one after another. Each of them corresponds to a number according to its rank, to a hieroglyph according to its form, to a symbol according to its relations with the other letters. All the letters derive from one among them, the iod, as we have already said1. The iod generated them in the following manner (See Sepher Jesirah). 1° Three mothers: The A (Aleph) The M '(The Mem) Q The Sh (The Schin) lï; 1. See the study on the word iod, hé, vau, hé (page 4-98.) — 484 — 2° Seven doubles (doubles because they express two meanings, one strong positive, the other soft negative): The B (Beth) 3, The G (Ghimel) y The D (Daleth) *7 The Ch (Caph) 3 The Ph (Phé) 2 The R (Resch) The T (Thau) n 3° Finally twelve simples formed by the other letters. To make all this clearer let us give the Hebrew alphabet indicating the quality of each letter as well as its rank. 3Each Hebrew letter thus represents three things: 1° A letter, that is to say a hieroglyph; 2° A number, that of the order the letter occupies; 3° An idea. To combine Hebrew letters is thus to combine numbers and ideas; hence the creation of the Tarot1. Each letter being a power is linked more or less closely with the creative forces of the Universe. These forces evolving in three worlds, one physical, one astral and one psychic, each letter is the point of departure and the point of arrival for a host of correspondences. To combine Hebrew words is consequently to act upon the Universe itself, hence the Hebrew words used in magical ceremonies. Now that we know the alphabet in general we must study the meaning and the relations of each of the twenty-two letters of this alphabet. This is what we shall now do. We shall see in this study, made after Lenain, the correspondences of each letter with the divine names, the angels and the sephiroth. * * * The ancient rabbis, the philosophers and the kabbalists explain, according to their system, the order, the harmony and the influences of the heavens upon the world, by the 22 Hebrew letters that comprise the mystic alphabet of the Hebrews2. EXPLANATION OF THE MYSTERIES OF THE HEBREW ALPHABET. This alphabet designates: 1° From the letter aleph to the letter iod the invisible world, that is to say the angelic world (sovereign intelligences receiving the influences of the first eternal light attributed to the Father from whom all emanates). 2° From the letter 2 caph to the one named tsadé designates different orders of angels who inhabit the visible world, that is to say the astrological world attributed to God the Son who signifies the divine wisdom that created this infinity of globes circulating in the immensity of space, each of which is under the safeguard of an intelligence specially charged by the creator with preserving them 1 and 2.
