13° They are almost all unaware that the priests of the Orient had among themselves a common idiom, of high antiquity, and that it was the language of science and of religion; that this idiom passed for a theurgic, magical and efficacious language; that it was the first cause of supernatural effects, and the instrument of the priests' power over the divinities. The influence of magic words having long since ceased to be recognized among us, I have never found a scholar to whom I could make understood this important point of the history of Paganism. I would have been much better understood, two or three hundred years ago, than today; because, in that time, a great part of ancient ideas still circulated in the world. 4° They do not know that this language was reproduced by the hieroglyphs, and that the hieroglyphs were also theurgic and magical, on account of the language they represented. 5° They are unaware that the priests had two methods for expressing the principles of their sciences, principally of theology. The first method, imitative of words, complete and detailed, by means of which propositions were expressed in extenso: that is what we call the hieroglyphs of texts. The other, summary and mnemonic, imitative of thoughts; in which the precepts of the sciences were indicated only by composite images: this latter employed the great images, the idols, and was for the use of consummate scholars. These are the emblematic figures of the gods. concerning the ancient superstitions, preserved in the treatises on astrology and magic, and in a host of practices and opinions still in force in the Orient. Yet it is there that one finds a mine of curious observations, and comparisons useful for the study of ancient religions. But no: scholars despise all these things, much as the Mohammedans do; but they do not have, as the latter do, the motive of fanaticism.
26° They do not know that the sacred language and hieroglyphic writing existed among all the peoples where the sacerdotal sciences and magic had been introduced: among the Phoenicians and the Chaldeans, for example h This single citation lets us at once glimpse the certainty and the depth of the science enclosed within the Pyramids. Now, what is the Bible, or rather what is the most important portion of the Bible: Genesis? the work of moses Moses was a priest of Osiris, he was one of those prodigious scholars raised within the temples and possessors of formidable knowledge. Moses had passed through all the degrees of the sacerdotal hierarchy, that is to say that he had learned all the orders of science, and it is this man who, after sixty years of study, would supposedly have found no better way to make his knowledge known to us than the tale of a man and a woman conversing with a serpent about an apple in a kitchen garden! Simple logic shows us that there is a misunderstanding in this matter, and since we possess, to judge this man, only a few translations of his work, it remains for us to know whether the translators have not done a work of 1 . The existence of a sacred language and writing, common to the priests of the various nations, and vehicle of the sacerdotal sciences, greatly disturbs the scholars of today, who dream only of Coptic, and see in the hieroglyphs an ancient Coptic, which has almost no relation to the modern language. It is a conventional Coptic, found again in a system of the same kind. The sacred language worked miracles; this poor Coptic has not worked any to this day. The Rosetta monument is still there, with its great hieroglyphic page altogether uncomprehended. But here is something else. The Ethiopians, fathers of the Egyptians, had the hieroglyphs and did not have Coptic. Well then, it will be said that formerly it was otherwise, and that the Ethiopians gave the whole of Coptic to the Egyptians, keeping nothing of it for themselves.
3- 384 — of treason and have not led us into error knowingly or unknowingly. It is therefore a history of the Bible that we are going to sketch; but beforehand it is indispensable to study very closely the Egyptian procedures, since it is these very procedures that the priest of Osiris surnamed Moses will employ. This surname given to initiates has led some modern critics to believe that Moses, no more than Homer or Orpheus, ever existed. This idea comes, like all its kindred notions, from ignorance of the things of antiquity. All the names of initiates are particular names given after the fact, as the following extract shows us: I am tempted to believe that Pythagoras is no more the true name of the philosopher of Samos, than Zoroaster is that of the philosopher of Bactria. Pythagoras means one who speaks python, that is to say who speaks from the belly, an engastrimith, from bithen (belly). This has been confused with pethen, serpent, because the magicians, with their modulated murmurs, charmed serpents. Pythagoras thus means a ventriloquist; and this was an attribute of prophets; Pythagoras was evidently an Egyptian prophet; he wore its costume. One may say about the same of Porphyry and of Iamblichus. It is known that the Syriac name of the first of these philosophers was Malk, and that he changed this name to that of Porphyry, which means purple. Malk has been explained as king; I think there is an error. Malk, the operator, a surname given to Mercury, applied to the hierogrammate; the latter wore a red ribbon around his head and wings on his back. Thus Malk and Porphyry mean a hierogrammate. As for Iamblichus, it comes from the same root, Maïak; it is written Iamlikh: ia for the oriental article ha: Hama- — 385 —
