2We have promised to conclude our exposition by giving the plans of the two principal treatises that have been written on the question: that of Kircher and that of Lenain. The reader will now understand these plans thanks to the exposition he has just gone through, and he will see that we have made every effort to summarize as well as possible this part of Hebrew Kabbalah. PLAN OF KIRCHER'S STUDY Ch. 1. The divine names. — The divisions of Kabbalah. -- 2. History and origins of Kabbalah. — 3. First foundation of Kabbalah. — The alphabet, mystic order of its characters. -- 4. The names and surnames of God. o. The Zimph tables or the combinations of the Hebrew alphabets. — 6. Of the name of 72 letters (Hin*). - 7. The tetragrammatic name of antiquity. — - 8. Most holy mystical theology of the Hebrews. — Kabbalah of the ten Sephiroths or divine numerations. — 9. Of the various representations of the Sephiroths and of their channels, the 32 ways of Wisdom. — 10. The 50 gates of Intelligence. PLAN OF LENAIN'S STUDY Ch. 1. Of the name of God and of his attributes. — 2. Of the origin of the divine names, their attributes and their influence on the Universe. (Alphabet and meaning of the letters.) — 3. Explanation of the 72 attributes of God and of the 72 angels who dominate over the Universe. — 4. The 72 names. — 5. Explanation of the sacred calendar. — 6. The influences of the 72 genii, their attributes and their mysteries. — 7. The mysteries (Practical Kabbalah). Magic. — o3.'{ —
3§ o. — THE PHILOSOPHY OF KABBALAH THE SOUL ACCORDING TO KABBALAH 2". — The philosophy of the Kabbalah. The systematic part of the Kabbalah is set forth in the preceding paragraph. It remains for us to speak of the philosophical part. We wrote, on the occasion of the reissue of the excellent book by M. Ad. Franck, a critique of this work in which we summarized to the best of our ability the doctrinal teachings of the Kabbalah, connecting these teachings to some points of contemporary science, according to our custom. We can do no better than to reproduce this work here, following it with the letter that M. Franck addressed to us on this subject. Then, in order to properly indicate the depth of the kabbalistic data concerning man and his transformations, and the identity of this data with the oriental tradition, we shall conclude this paragraph with a study by a contemporary German kabbalist: Carl von Leiningen. 1 ANALYSIS OF M. FRANCK'S BOOK THE KABBALAH I M. Franck made of the Kabbalah a very serious and very thorough study, but from the particular point of view of contemporary philosophers and of university criticism. We shall therefore have to summarize to the best of our ability his opinions on this subject; but placing beside them those of contemporary kabbalists who have more or less knowledge of Esotericism. These two somewhat different points of view can only shed an entirely new light upon a question so important in Occult Science. These considerations indicate by themselves the plan we shall follow in this study. We shall summarize successively M. Franck's opinions on the Kabbalah itself, on its antiquity
