1III GENERAL SUMMARY In summary, occult Science can be considered from two distinct points of view: 1° As traditional doctrine, it furnishes entirely new elements of study to the philosopher and to the historian. It allows one to weigh antiquity at its true value and to affirm the existence of general discoveries touching our applied sciences, at a very remote period. The esoteric teachings on the constitution of the Universe and of Man, on invisible beings and their existence, allow one to understand, in a more scientific light, a host of facts reputed to be miraculous. Finally, the struggles of Gnosticism and of Clericalism in the West, the ever more complete triumphs of the former over the latter, enable the historian to see clearly into the actions produced by the secret societies still at work since the destruction of the Order of the Temple. 2° As method, occult Science comes to give all contemporary researchers a new working tool. There is no need to plumb the philosophical theories of esotericism in order to understand well this method of analogy, which furnishes experimenters with manifold elements of research. By combining the theoretical data furnished by anal- XXXIII

MORALITY: « In the ancient Orient there was neither reward nor « punishment after death; man was rewarded in « this world, whether in his own person or in that of his « descendants, and always in material interests. « Egyptian theology granted man two souls; « one, the intelligent and thinking soul, on leaving « the body rejoined the supreme intelligence from which it « had emanated; the other, the sensitive soul, re-entered by the gate « of the gods, or Capricorn, into Amenthes, the watery heaven « where it always dwelt with pleasure, until, « descending by the gate of men, or Cancer, it came « to animate a new body1. » This extract sums up a great part of the arguments invoked by esotericism in favor of rational faith, the source of morality. Science claimed to kill forever every possibility of any faith whatsoever, thanks to the rigor of its demonstrations. This very rigor has come to extend the domain of faith, abandoning the hollow affirmations of theology in order to enlighten itself by the ever more astonishing discoveries of experimentalism. Truth can no longer be the exclusive privilege of one 1. Porphyre, De antro nympharum, cited by de Brière. XXXIV
3cult or of one sect. The principles of esotericism are, at bottom, identical in Buddhism as in Christianity; there can be but one Science and but one Morality, just as there is but one Truth — none of these terms could be the opposite of the other two. Science, in showing that, in the embryo, the heart beats rhythmically before the nerves that will animate it have come into being, or even before the muscular tissue is differentiated, proclaims the existence of a principle unknown to it and fashioning the physical body according to a fated plan. Science, in showing that nerve cells disappear a hundred times over without memory losing a single one of its recollections, implicitly admits the existence of something that coordinates sensations outside the material world. And we shall speak neither of the phenomena of hypnotism nor of the telepsychy established several times over by Professor Richet — all the discoveries converge, unanimously, toward this affirmation: the soul exists. But is this soul the scholastic entity of the theologians, or of the dreamers of every school? Is it this principle, enemy of the flesh, which will undergo eternal pains or eternal bliss after death? To the invention of clericalism, tending to allow the social vultures to exploit, by means of a tithe, the poor and the humble, esotericism replies with a law that manifests the most terrible justice but also the most merciful: the law of reactions equal and opposite in direction to the actions producing them. Go on, then, gentlemen of finance, after the gain. Ruin the humble without fear, torture the mothers, crush the children with harsh labor and ever-growing taxes; the priest, an official salaried by you, is there to inspire in them courage in the name of the almighty God who XXXV
