1with upper apex, represented by the three points and situated just after it, I seek the meaning of the other letter, D. According to the method of oppositions, I know that this letter, being opposed to the first, will have a meaning reciprocal to the first meaning, Liberty; this meaning must be enclosed within the idea of Necessity. But the triangle with lower apex • . * soon shows me that this necessity is passive in its manifestations, and the idea of Duty comes to take the place of the letter D; the reaction of L upon D gives Power. This very simple example allows one to grasp the data of the method of oppositions, which is of great usefulness in the explanation of mysterious figures. This method is always employed either by designating the opposites by different colors, like the two columns J and B of the Freemasons, one red, the other blue; or by designating them by different forms, like the mouth and the tail of the serpent, images of the active and the passive, or the symbols of generation placed on the Masonic columns; or again by giving them different directions, as in the Seal of Solomon (the two triangles with opposite apexes) or in the cross (opposition of the Lines).
2Such are the three ways in which antagonists are designated in the pantacles. We find the application of this again in the various ways of representing the quaternary, image of the absolute (see Cycle des Nombres, chap. II). Literally, the quaternary is designated by four Hebrew letters: HW. The first, iod, represents the active. The second, H (hé), is the image of the passive. The third, vau, represents the bond that unites the two. Finally the fourth, H (hé), is the second repeated, and indicates the perpetuity of the productions of Osiris-Isis. To write these letters in the manner of the initiates, one must arrange them in a cross, thus: — 970 — In this case, the direction indicates the meaning of the elements, for the active elements (iod and vau) are on the same vertical line. The passive elements are on the same horizontal line. One may likewise designate this quaternary by different forms: The Wand, image of the active, will represent the iod (*). The Cup, hollow, image of the passive, will represent the first hé The Sword, an image of the alliance of the active and the passive, The Cross, will represent the vau (1). The Disc will represent two superposed cups, and consequently 2 times 2, indicating the repetition of the hé (H). Wand or Club Cup or Heart Sword or Spade Disc or Diamond Such are the elements, images of the absolute, that constitute playing cards. These elements are painted in two opposite ways (red and black) to show that the quaternary is formed by the two-by-two opposition of two primordial forces, one active: red, the other passive: black. Here is the geometric summary of this way of considering the quaternary: t&ixton H- CûVLj ÏC. _|_
3Consider the 21° key of the book of Hermes, and you will find all this again in the four symbolic animals. In summary, the second method of explanation consists in opposing the top of the figure with the bottom, the right with the left, in order to draw from it the clarifications necessary for the explanation. It is rare that the meaning of a figure, however mysterious 971
