1— 242 — Saint-Esprit. (Note du traducteur .) — 243 —

1— 242 — Holy Spirit. It is the seed of the woman, or the feminine principle within man, that is destined « to crush the head of the serpent », in other words, to overcome materiality through spirituality. When this virgin soul is ready to receive it, the seed will take root and germinate. Then the son of man will be « lifted up », and, like the tree of life whose branches point toward heaven, he will draw his nourishment from above, from the spiritual light poured forth by the universal soul and dispensed by the divine Spirit, our eternal father-mother, « God ». Until the moment when the first substances are organized, man does not exist as a personality; consequently, he is born, in the first place, physically, and his lower principles draw their material subsistence from the earth and take root below. 11 faut, then, that he « be born again » spiritually. The spiritual being must take root at the center of love (will), and, in order that goodness, wisdom, and universal love may take the place of self-love, he must rise toward heaven, must draw his intellectual nourishment from understanding, and the nourishment of his heart from that spiritual source which never fails. There is a spiritual state that is not indicated upon our table, because it does not fall among the seven; but, just as Nirvana is above and beyond these, being the supreme state of the Divinity, its antithesis, called in Sanskrit « Avitchi » 1, might be defined as being below and beyond in the opposite direction, were it possible to localize a State. ■ 1. In our view, Avitchi would rather be the antithesis of the Devachan, and 1 annihilation, or the « second death » spoken of in the Gospel, the antithesis of Nirvana. (Translator's note.) — 243 —
2There is yet another ladder of seven degrees, or stages, which indicates the ascent from earth to heaven. Jacob's Ladder occupies an important place among the symbols of Freemasonry. Its true origin has been lost among the worshippers of the pagan rites, but the symbol has remained. Among them it has always been considered as composed of seven rungs which, as Dr Oliver points out, might be an allusion to the seven stories of the Tower of Babel, or to the sabbatical period. In the Persian mysteries of Mithras, the seven-runged ladder was the symbol of the soul's approach toward perfection. These rungs were called portals, and, in allusion to this, the candidate had to pass through seven dark and winding caverns, which was called making the ascent of the ladder of perfection. Each of these caverns represented a state of existence through which the soul was supposed to pass on its progressive path, advancing toward the state of truth. Each rung of the ladder was supposed to be composed of an ever purer metal, and took the name of its protecting planet. One may form an idea of this symbolic ladder by the following table: 7 Or Soleil Amour. 6 Argent. . . . Lune Sagesse. 5 Mercure. . . . Mercure Compréhension. 4 Cuivre .... Vénus Beauté. 3 Plomb. . . . Terre Chair. 2 Fer Mars Puissance. 1 Étain Jupiter Conseil. Among the Hebrews, it was supposed that the rungs of the ladder were infinite. The Essenes first reduced them to seven, which they called the Sephiroth, and of which — 244
3the names were: Strength, Mercy, Beauty, Eternity, Glory, Foundation, and Kingdom. « At its base, this ladder touches the earth, and the angels who are upon it indicate the souls descending into incarnation, and even, says the Kabbalah, down to the lowest degrees of the universe, to the most infinitesimal point of matter, in order to rise again to heaven. Jacob (the traveling soul) is asleep at night at the foot of the ladder, with a stone for a pillow, symbol of matter in its lowest state. The place was called Luz, or separation, which means the place of the greatest darkness and of separation from God. However, when Jacob awakes, the soul knows that, even in the deepest abyss of matter, there is no real separation from the divine life; hence his exclamation: « Truly, the Lord is in this place! » and he called it Bethel (house of God), whereas its name had previously been Luz (separation). But to return to the constitution of man, which so especially concerns us, we must remember that esoteric doctrine teaches that the three highest principles, of the seven that constitute man, are not yet completely developed in the present state of humanity. When man attains perfection upon earth, he will be endowed with the seven principles and with seven corresponding senses, which has been the case for a few truly divine men who have appeared as messengers upon this planet. The state we call death has influence only upon the first three principles — the body, vitality, and the astral form. The first, we know, comes from the earth and returns to the earth to decompose there and enter — 245
